Default Hip Pain - What could it be?

I'm at a loss trying to figure out the cause of pain in my right hip while seated. I normally sleep on my back but if I happen roll on my right side my hip starts to ache and I wake up. I currently take naproxen ED for my shoulder issues (surgeries/arthritis) but the naproxen isn't seemingly doing much for my hip. I do have Snapping Hip Syndrome but don't believe this to be the cause of the dull constant pain/ache which occurs approx. 20 minutes after sitting. I thought possibly my arthritis has now gone to my hip but I have ZERO issues when I am mobile: no pain, stiffness, aches, reduced ROM. My hams/quads/glutes/lower back all feel great with the pain coming from the front of the hip and in the joint itself. The problem started about 2 or 3 months ago and continues to intensify. I haven't suffered any trauma or changed anything up in my workout routines/lifestyle.

Anyone have suggestions or thoughts? I will address with my doc on my next visit but am looking to troubleshoot the problem beforehand.

Sounds like sitting or laying down on it is inflaming it for some reason. Ice it until you can see your doc.

In the joint, not the tendons/muscle structure?

As a secondary question, how have products like glucosamine worked for your arthritis?

If it comes after 20 min. or so, the way you are sitting or lying down may be causing nerve impingement.

Try this - bend at the waist with your knees straight and turn around like you were looking behind you. Now say my name and wink.

Does that hurt?

As soon as I get up and mobile the pain totally subsides. Not sure if ice is necessary then?

Yup, its in the joint...tendons/muscles feel fine. As for glucosamine, it didn't do much for me. I'm 35 with arthritis...I have a feeling 50 is going to feel ugly.

Hadn't thought of this...you might be on to something Bev. I have impingement in my shoulders and the sensation is somewhat similar although no tingling or pins and needles.

I tried and it didn't hurt at all....maybe you were doing something wrong? haha.

It could possibly be a labral tear, if it hurts from sitting and you can only relieve it by changing positions...GO SEE A DOCTOR...you will need an flouroscopic x-ray and then an MRI to see how extensive the tear is...and then a DOCTOR who specializes in this type of ailment (very few do) will determine how severe and IF surgery is absolutely necessary. Once the capsule is broken (in order to get to the labrum for repair) it may actually increase your pain. Best of luck and GO SEE A DOCTOR!!!

Thanks KIDD. Nate PM'd me pretty much saying the same thing. I'm going to do some reading on labral tears in hips and see how similar what I feel matches to the symptoms listed. I wouldn't be surprised if this does turn out to be the issue since I had a severe SLAP in my right shoulder repaired last summer. If I had a crystal ball I think I'd foresee more good times ahead.....

Thanks for everyone's help and input! I'll keep you posted.

I've tried many positions. Sitting and otherwise In all seriousness, I have tried every which way to get comfortable and as long as there is a bend in my hip there is discomfort. I have even tried shifting my weight to my left glute but it doesn't help. I love to row at the gym but can only muster max. 20 mins before it feels like my hip is catching and/or locking up. Riding the bike is pretty much the same. I wouldn't be surprised if my hips start falling apart just as my shoulders have done. I will call for an appt on Monday with my surgeon.

Nothing! I thought it was possibly me, maybe I was doing something wrong. I rechecked my form in the mirror over and over again and over again some more....

I've been working around the 'side effects' of a stress fracture for about ten years now. It's amazing how one joint can affect the rest of your body's well being when it's not working properly.

I hope your doctor is able to give you a proper diagnosis. My best wishes to a speedy recovery.
