Exclamation Tendon Ruptures & Antibiotics

FDA issues warning on Cipro, similar antibiotics
By RICARDO ALONSO-ZALDIVAR, Associated Press WriterTue Jul 8, 11:25 AM ET

Federal drug safety officials have imposed the government's most urgent warning on Cipro and similar antibiotics, citing risks that they can cause tendon ruptures, a serious injury that leaves some patients incapacitated.
The Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday ordered makers of flouroquinolone drugs — a potent class of antibiotics — to add a 'black box' warning to their products, which include Cipro, Levaquin, Floxin and other medications.
Patients should immediately stop taking the medications if they develop any tendon pain, swelling or inflammation.

i had a staph infection for 3 months that wouldnt go away and thats one of the many things they tried before they found out i was diabetic. along with 8000 mg of cephlex and 2.75 grams of vancomycen iv a day for a month and about 6 other orals at the same time.. and it still didnt go away.

this was 2 years ago and my dr. said NO lifting anything heavier then 25 lbs for a work restriction while i was on levaquin and no gym at all and for 2 months after i was off of it. it makes the tendons.ligaments, and soft tissues brittle. most of the tears have been at the muscle tendon tie in from what was explained to me by my dr.

Damn I was on Levaquin for 21 days last fall for prostatitis and I trained my ass off during that time. Lucky I didn't get hurt.

Hello 2005, when it was placed voluntarily on the boxes by the drug companies. Of course, this has always been a well know side effect of this drug class, by the people who prescribe it (or damn well should be)

Now, because there is another lawsuit, they change it to a "black box" warning. Why is black scarier than the white warning that is already there?

I love how reactionary our federal government / governing bodies are to litigation

from my understanding a abcess is either staph or much worse mrsa. they will do a swab test on it to see what it is. get the test ! its not something to mess around with. mine started the size of a small pimple and when i woke up in the am i couldnt put my arm down and it was the size of a baseball. i went to the er to have it drained and they looked at it for 5 min and said it was out of his hands and sent me to emergency surgery. the next day the surgen said it was the worst one hes seen in 20 years in the er. it had infected my blood and eaten the flesh almost to my chest wall. i had to goto an infectious disease center for iv infusion of vancomysen for a month. it sucked! completely killed my imune system. i had a constant head chest cold for about 3 months after. while i was eating things to try and rebuild it. my skin was pale and my boogers were completly white. it was crazy. to this day i have a 3 inch scar. they dont put stitches in it, the wound has to close from the inside out. so the scar is pretty wide. constant reminder.

Yeah this is well known. Its really contraindicated in pediatric patients because of its affect on collagen and growth.

I think fire engine red or yellow warnings are the scariest, or bile green.

Surgical incision and drainage is really the definitive answer. I saw a girl with an abcess from her pubicc bone to her anus roughly - was surgically drained, then she was placed on IV antibiotics for days in the hospital. She was better pretty quick. She was released after several days. Then I saw the results of the bacterial culture and sensitivity - the bacteria was not even sensitive to the antibiotics she was given. Her healing was entirely the drainage and tthen the natural healing of her body.

Staph is the most common cause of abcess but many germs could cause it. You do a swab and get a culture and sensitivity at the lab - tells you what the germ is and what antibiotics the germ is sensitive to.
