I find the crease at the hip as the lifter bends to get under the bar. I keep my eye on that spot as the lifter descends. That crease is below the top of the knee at the bottom of the squat. He doesn't break by much but he does break. Good lift. |

In this era of multi-ply suits, canvas suits, and 300+ and even 400+ pound lifters, a judge has (or at least I have) to find the crease at the hip as the lifter bends to get under the bar. That will often be my only opportunity to find the actual crease. I lock in on that point, and follow it all the way down as the lifter descends, because it most often becomes hidden behind a couple inches or more of material thickness, and/or belly.
In my opinion it is the responsibility of the referee to get into position to know when the plane has been broken and not the responsibility of the lifter to go beyond the rules to make it easy on the referee. It is my job to know where that crease is located, regardless of thickness of material or the size of the lifter. I don't have a dog in this fight. It isn't even my federation. I don't second guess other judges calls based on video. Video is an excellent tool for form critique in training, and for capturing memories of a meet. In my opinion is is useless for making accurate judgement calls of a lifter. |
