I AM the Alpha Male

Okay, I don't sleep without meds. I have a CPAP machine and am on temazapam. The meds are losing their potency and I can only hit deep sleep with nyquil and sleeping pills.
What else is out there to help me sleep? If I don't take meds I do not hit REM sleep at all. This is killing me. Any ideas?? SS, RB

I vote against Ambien. Being half your size and taking up to 15mgs without good results...I don't think it's worth anything for us resistant sorts.
As for OTC's...benadryl and doxylamine are sold as sleep meds, also not worth much. If you're already running on empty and just need to be pushed over the edge, any of these might help, but they won't work to get normal sleep. And be careful with the OTC's, because you can OD on them without taking a whole package...the benadryl will inhibit breathing, and the doxylamine is psychoactive. Ooh, and be careful with halcion. Takes a full mg to knock me out, but then I'm out for a while. Not that you're likely to get a script for this on accident... Last edited by jaleena; 07-04-2008 at 04:59 AM. |

I have serious sleeping probs and the only thing that really works for me is xanax, a blunt and a glass of red wine. But I dont recommend that to anyone who has to take drug tests, lol.
I have had some luck with "Simply Sleep" a generic OTC med. It didn't leave me with the groggy after-morning feeling like Nyquil and other meds do. |

I LOVE trazodone. I don't toss and turn, i don't dream and I don't even get up to take a piss for at least 7 hours.
Ambein to me is the devil. I lost huge chunks of time. Woke up were I didn't fall asleep. Talked to people on the cell and have no recollection of the conversation and found the bread and PB in the fridge the next morning.... hmmmmmmm -TAZ |

i use lunesta, i like it. when i first got sleep meds, my doc gave me both ambien and lunesta to try. ambien made me a nut at night and made me wakeup feeling shitty,. the only downside to lunesta that i can tell is its less powerful.. with ambien if i take it i'm out no matter what im doing. with lunesta i still need a routine to put myself to bed, like read, stretch, etc.. i need to be relaxed for it to work.
also, lunesta leaves a god awful taste in your mouth |

Dude I am the sleep med king on here. I have been on everything.... Ambien worked the best for me and then I started abusing it. I would take 3 or 4 of them and make myself stay awake to get a funny feeling from them and to hallucinate. I hated Lunesta because of the taste. Trazidone worked for me when I was younger but not now. Ive tried all kinds of OTC stuff and they dont work. I started doing some real crazy shit while I was on ambien. A few people on here know what I mean. Like having weird chats over PM's or on yahoo and not remembering... So I came off of Ambien on my own because I got scared of what might happen... My combo that had been working was 1mg xanax 20mg ambien and 600mg of Seroquill.... Seroquill is some powerful shit. So now I just take the xanax and seroquill. Im sure that I could sleep on less than 600mg but my doc says that 600 is the dose that I need to be on for my Manic side
![]() I would say if I had to choose the lesser of all evils I would go with Trzidone if it still worked for me. But People keep telling me that I need to find out why im not sleeping and its not healthy to be on sleep meds for years at a time.... I know why I dont sleep... Its because I get very manic at night and I dont know why |

I've had my machine for years and I don't know if it needs adjusting. I'll get a new study.
I'll talk to my doc and let you all know what's what. That Trazidone sounds like it may be the next step. Part of the trouble is that I'm addicted to my sleeping pill now and that part sucks!! I just need stronger stuff!! SS, RB P.S. GT, Jack and Coke gets me wired, not tired.

My Cpap is calibrated to 16. I get annual checks to make sure the "16" is where I should be. I can appreciate the others suggestion certain meds.....but the Sleep Apnea issue puts things on another level. So you have to consider the Cpap and meds to take and not just meds. If the machine is not calibrated correctly and you fall into a deep sleep as the result of the meds......you may not wake back up bru. Remember we have periods where we stop breathing. Without the Cpap, when I stopped breathing, my body would shake or whatever to start my breathing again. Taking Meds may hinder or retard this process if your Cpap is not set properly. I am no sleep guru, but i had a friend die as a result of this sleep apnea thing, so I take this very seriously. Unfortunately for him, he forgot his Cpap for a trip and never woke back up. I have been using my Cpap since 2000 and even had two procedures done and still not right. Oxygen levels are extremely low (see my post on my blood work) and this shiat is really effecting my health. I say to get another study done FIRST and then consider another sleep med. and oh....it is approx 4am on Friday. I have been back up since 245am.....so I can relate to your not sleeping issue. even with the Cpap, I get 3-4hrs of sleep per night. IMO a lot has to do with anxiety about not waking up. My Doc wants me to take Welbutrin to try and relax. Prolong lack of oxygen and inadequate sleep issues can cause health probs bru. Again, go see your doctor. Devices to be used are contingent on the sleep apnea issue. There are different types of sleep apnea, so the mouth piece may not work for some. |

Trazodone has been known to cause priapisms (painful erections for prolonged periods of time... not a good thing!!), including potential for permanent erectile dysfunction and impotence. This doesn't only happen to men. So, beware... Not saying don't take it, but I'm sure this potential side effect is something most of you men and women would want to avoid. Doctors are supposed to warn you of this, but I'm sure many don't.
I would never recommend Ambien. I got a prescription because I wasn't sleeping after my latest shoulder surgery. I think the combination of that and Valium was what made me sleep. Alone, I don't necessarily sleep and almost always hallucinate. I usually take Benadryl to force myself to sleep, but hate the hang over afterwards. |
