Default 5 board bench useless?

We have a fair amount of PL'ers at our gym. One guy in particular is a decent bencher but I was wondering just how effective a 5 board press is. He uses bands and chains from time to time as well as a 1, 2, 3, and 4 board press for lockouts. But the other day he loads the bar up w/ I want to say 550lbs. and then does 2reps w/ 5 boards. It looked like the bar only went about 2" to 3". I'm not saying it isn't effective but sure doesn't look like it to my inexperienced eye.

It is not uncommon for a lifter to get a red light because he didn't lock out his bench press. He manages the entire lift except he is unable to lock-out that last inch or three. 5 board press helps to address this. Probably not much use for the average gym rat, but a good tool for the competetive powerlifter.

Good question btw, cranny!

Yes, 5 board does have a place in a pl's arsenal.

5 Board is critical for shirt benchers!! It's all about the lockout!! If you have long enough arms you can even use a 6 board!! I've only known one person who had long enough arms to use a 7 board!! SS, RB

This is incorrect. It's useful for anyone you just see shirted bencher doing it more. We've used it on many raw lifters and they have improved their max bench drastically. SS, RB
