Default Protein & Chemo/Radiation

Hey - quick question for anyone that has input:

A family friend was told that during treatment they needed around 90g of protein, and also that roughly 10% of their weight will be lost. Current stats are:

89yrs old
4'9"
90lbs or so

I was thinking a protein with a calories is best, especially b/c the mass is near the esophagus, which can make it inflammed, ie hard to eat. Also, she can not use milk to mix, so something that mixes best with water or juice.

I suggested Nectar, but I don't have any experience with anything besides Isopure Zero Carb.

All help appreciated.

No anavar, at least not yet, treatments start on Monday...

Any fruity flavored ones that people recommend?

+1 Good stuff! The ON's 100% Gold Standard is also good stuff and seems to mix alittle easier than others shakes and seems lighter on the belly.

Give her anything that sounds good to her. It's unlikely she'll have any appetite. Crushed ice and a warm, soft blanket may help her feel better. Lots of TLC.

Not really an answer to your question, I know.

When my granny would get Chemo she couldn't eat/drink anything cold for about 3 days after... it would burn her tongue. Keep in mind they both may alter her 'taste' so she may not even be able to tolerate much. I would opt for a flavorless protein that mixes easily in water. This is what I did for my granny.

What about Ensure?

My Mom seemed to be able to get that down during her Chemo. Plus, it's more of a meal replacement w/ vit and minerals, which a lot of protein powders don't have. She will likely lose her appetitie and be deficient in a lot of those.

I wish the best for her!

89yr old woman on chemo....doubt any oncologist would prescribe that.
dexameth or zofran probly to keep the N/V at bay.
Oncos dont really look into AAS to go with chemo, although they should.
Badgergrl is correct, things like ensure are a staple in hospitals for protein/nutrients to those with poor intake.
Better to use more paletable and fatening things than protein shakes, her appetite will be down, and will be nauseated a lot (depending on the chemo).

Whats her regimine?

Honestly smoking weed will do wonders for her appetite and can help with N/V. Im serious here, Marinol just isnt the same or nearly as effective.

My friend's on a chemo regime right now. He takes zofran and dexomathazone, but neither really helps with the nausea. They've prescribed him emmend, and keep trying to push it on him, but he has trouble with swallowing large pills. The only thing that seems to work for him is smoking medicinal marijuana, but make sure you ask the shop which one to get if you decide to try it. There are some that are uppers, which can increase anxiety and nausea, and there are downers that will help with sleep, nausea and appetite.

Well, you would be wrong. Its a large cell type, lung cancer, the mass in the upper quadrant near the esophagus, causing a partial collapse of the lung. As a candidate for surgery, her age is against her, therefore the first course of treatment is: 6wks Treatment consisting of - Chemo 1x/wk on Tuesday, Radiation 5x/wk.

Thanks all for the great input. I'm visiting this weekend and will pick up some Ensure, and check on the status of the protein. 1st week is down, and she feels quite well to date. Of course, I am well aware that is subject to change after longer term treatment.
