Default Basmati Rice!

What's your take on using Basmati rice for contest prep diet? I will use about 1/2 cup when I do decide to eat it. Tastes better than brown rice. Yuk!

oh stop whining... You have to learn to acclamate your taste buds, so you know ahem you come in tighter. Never had this rice you speak of... I pretty much go with yams and brown rice. I keep it simple just works better for me

I love Basmati rice, but I always considered it a white grain.

I personally would need to see the nutritional info of Basmati vs Brown rice to determine if it's "safe" for prep. If the macros are comparable and you don't see a raise in sugar/carbs or a drop in fiber for the Basmati... then I say give it a shot.

Another alternative, though, to brown rice is chinese grains. I've heard this mix is pretty good (and competition friendly) particularly when cooked in a rice steamer/cooker.

Thanks for your input. Those Chinese grains sound good. Have you tried them?

Pretty much all of the kinds of rice are high GI.

Does anybdody have Rick Mendoza's huge GI list by any chance?

He did most of the research into GI value of common foods.

Couldn't find the list, but this was on The Glycemic Index

"How to Switch to a Low GI Diet
The basic technique for eating the low GI way is simply a "this for that" approach - ie, swapping high GI carbs for low GI carbs. You don't need to count numbers or do any sort of mental arithmetic to make sure you are eating a healthy, low GI diet.

Use breakfast cereals based on oats, barley and bran
Use breads with wholegrains, stone-ground flour, sour dough
Reduce the amount of potatoes you eat
Enjoy all other types of fruit and vegetables
Use Basmati or Doongara rice
Enjoy pasta, noodles, quinoa
Eat plenty of salad vegetables with a vinaigrette dressing "

At least I got the original question answered!
And I haven't tried the Chinese grains yet. I need a rice cooker first... and a food scale... *sigh* I need to go shopping!

I am sure you will shred nicely...

TCAKE, go to to target they have a nice little red rice cooker, forgot the brand, but its like 15 bucks and I use it for my brown rice and also as a steamer for veggies.

Although I am not having fruit on my cut.. I am also cutting some carbs later in the day. I need to shed after the little cheat I had today

personal experience - basmathi rice did not work well for me while in contest prep in comparison with brown rice

so my suggestion would be brown rice rather than basmathi

Wild rice is actually a better option. But its textured taste does take some getting used to.
