Default Uncooked Rice ?

Out of carb sources... put some raw brown rice in my protein shake (mixed with spoon...)

Just curious, Is there any reason to think this would be less safe than other raw sources i.e. oats etc?

Other than for the possibility of spores of bacillus cereus, which can cause food poisoning, no.

I'm originally from Guam and everyone in my family will occasionally grab a handful of rice out of the 25lb rice bag and snack on it. No one has died or contracted any kind of foodbourne illness. I say enjoy your nestle crunch shake, and I'll join you on it! Cheers

Three weeks ago I undercooked my rice and got extremely ill. You can get food poisioning from undercooked rice and beans.

What kind of rice are you guys eating that makes you sick when undercooked? I've never had this happen.

Try throwing raw oats in. That's what I put in my pre wo shake.

Off topic here. Does anyone know if there is any detriment to mixing a protein shake in milk or water & leaving it sit for 2 or 3 days, refrigerated.

I can't speak for certain here, I remember hearing that it's not that good an idea.

I know from personal experience that powdered whey is still milk, and mixing it with water and having it sit in your car for a day and trying to drink it is a nasty idea. The funny thing was, I couldn't taste it, but I could smell it. It took me half the shake to realize what was causing the smell!!!!

Interesting...

I've heard that reheating rice can cause food poisoning. Is this true?

It's true that you could get food poisoning from eating reheated rice. But it's not actually the reheating that's the problem – it's the way the rice has been stored before reheating.

Uncooked rice can contain spores of Bacillus cereus, bacteria that can cause food poisoning. When the rice is cooked, the spores can survive. Then, if the rice is left standing at room temperature, the spores will germinate into bacteria. These bacteria will multiply and may produce toxins (poisons) that cause vomiting or diarrhoea. Reheating the rice won't get rid of these toxins.

So, the longer cooked rice is left at room temperature, the more likely it is that bacteria, or the toxins they produce, could stop the rice being safe to eat.

It's best to serve rice when it has just been cooked. If that isn't possible, cool the rice as quickly as possible (ideally within one hour) and keep it in the fridge for no more than one day until reheating.

Remember that when you reheat any food, you should always check that it's piping hot all the way through, and avoid reheating more than once.

Haha, wow. Look at all the hazards of rice!! We make fried rice for breakfast two days after cooking rice in the rice cooker and just leaving it there for two days!

I just can't imagine that rice is all that awful. People have been doing this for years, and those that I know personally have never had a problem with it, myself included...and this is over a lifetime.

I know when I leave a dirty shake container on my work bench, it stinks the next day. However this would be refrigerated.

I KNOW I was surprised to read the content of that as well.

We all do have a different level of 'bacteria' and antibodies in our bodies, some more than others... perhaps you have a strong stomach to kill all those little guys whereas the avg person may get sick from it.
a good ideer.

I dunno, but how fresh the rice is could have something to do with it.... If its been sitting in a warehouse, store, then your house for months or a year+ then that HAS to be worse than getting it fresher

I routinely leave my rice out to cool... now im paranoid! lol
