I was wondering how many of you train your stones

In series...

Ascending weights loaded onto a platform. Which is the usual setup you would see at a comp, but it requires a large platform.

For reps...

Single stone loaded (& unloaded) as quickly as posible on to a platform.

The reason I ask is I'm in the process of upgrading my stone collection and the old platform will no longer make due. Up to this point I have mostly trained my stones "for reps" due to space constrictions, as I have to fit everything I have including my 2 tires inside ~85% of a 2 car garage.

So should I make a platform that holds 5 stones or stick a compact 2 placing platform? Or something in between? And is there a disadvantage to training stones "for reps" only?

ps. NJ Misfits how often do you guys adjust the height on your sexy adjustable platform?

We just train them differently depending on how we feel - sometimes runs, sometimes reps w/1 weight, sometimes singles w/heavier stones. It also depends on what events we worked prior that on day, as we usually do stones last.

Overall, I'm more partial to loading a moderate weight stone (300-335# for my strength level) for 5-6 reps. After that I'll load the heavy stone for a single, or two.

Our main platform holds 6 stones, 3 per side. It is 50" in height and the top dimensions are that of a 4x8 sheet of plywood, sectioned off into the 6 sections with 2x4's (see attachment). Makes it easy to do a series or load for reps, which ever you're doing that day. Also, more than 1 person can be working on the platform at the same time this way. Although we haven't done it yet, we're going to make a couple riser boxes that will fit snugly into one of the sectioned-off areas so we can add height if necessary.

Stones are always done in series. Because at a show they are always done in series

Nice!!! Thanks bro will consider that, the risers are a great idea too.

Ya but my theory goes... If a show has 5 stone series run and in training you can bang off 5 quick reps with the 4th stone in the series and the 5th stone is not too much heavier from the 4th. Then I would say that I am confident that at that perticular show I will load all the stones in a decent time frame.

My whole problem is space. I know that a large platform you could do both with but how neccesary is it? The main problem I forsee is puting on a show and not having the right platform.

We Train mostly series, high boxes, 52-60" If the speed isn't there for that day, then may decide to rep out with the biggest stone.
most shows are series, but lately I see 1 stone for reps in a few contests.

Do like Freitag does and load a stone, have your boys reset it , while you do a 25 yard dash and back then reload

The risk for injury is huge when the weight gets heavy, your form gets sloppy. Series of 5 reps or stones and no more.

Remember you dont lift a stone..As a 231er your throw the stone with your hips

Ahh, the wise one has spoken:werd:

In the past I almost always repped out on the stones since A. My paltform is tiny and B. My heaviest stone is 285lbs. I guess once I get bigger stones I will not be doing that anymore. Good call on the form too.

I always thought that one would thrust the stone with the hips regradless of strenght/weight class/etc... I thought thats just the way you do 'eerr.

285-300 20inch stone is great for training. We have a 330 and it gets to be a bit much for rep work.
