Any tips on how to make it feel better? In some pretty serious pain here from the left side of my neck (posterior) all the way down to the middle of my upper back:(

Not sure if I strained my neck, or more distinguishably, a damn trap muscle.

This Ibuprofen 800mg crap isn't doing jack, and I can only sleep on my back really without there being pain....if I don't move.

I think I might have done it doing incline barbell chest press. I have a bum shoulder (possibly a torn labrum of sort), and I was trying to be cautious with my movement while performing the exercise, but I think I placed undue strain elsewhere, and wallah....hurt neck/trap???:(

That's a guess though. I had this same injury about 6mo ago and it took over 3mo to heal. Wasn't sure then how it was caused.

Ughhhh....I feel like a sissy, and I can't even turn my damn neck at all to look around me, especially driving.

I have pre-arthritis in my neck as well as strain atleast a couple of the muscle in there about 3 times a year.

Heating pad, and a neck brace for a couple days. also stretch it out well.

The neck brace while sleeping is most important. If you can get ahold of some muscle relaxers.

Hey BMJ,

I would wait about a week or so post injury and seek out some myofascial release/deep tissue work. Or shoot for some ART to help out with the spams.

Or have that little chica of yours dig in and find the adhesions/scar tissue/spasm to release them. Also some hands on retraction and neck mobilizaton can help.

Always start with ice to, after the initial injury or after the gym. Many times people treat low back and neck strains with heat only, when they would not do that other injuries.

She actually did that last night for me, and it was very effective. Almost immediately afterwards I felt a little better. After getting some rest last night, I feel much, much better today. I was gonna ice it up too, but didn't get around to it. I'm gonna try to get that going today, along with another deep massage.

You already know about my bum shoulder, and I really think I am just gonna have to do it because imo, that is the only thing that is gonna make things better for me. If I can hold out until this next fall, i'm gonna try to see about having it done then. I don't really want to go into the summer with rehab with the heat and everything out here. By next fall, i'm gonna need a break from this supplement use anyway.

It would be nice to develop an upper chest again:(...lol.

btw....I don't know much about the benefits and differences of icing and heating injuries, that might actually be a good thread to post up and sticky.

I used to do that often when doing military press.
I find that a muscle relaxer helps also. The muscle will spasm less from that and reieve some of the pain from that.

Def ice right afterward. DO you have access to electric stimulators they use like a physical therapy?? That with an ice pack would probably kick ass for you too..

I use the Ibu 800s also.

Good luck man. A hot shower puring down on it always feels better to me for a little bit too.

Sometimes its more than natural stuff can take cae of. I use some heavy pain meds/muscle relaxers and barely get relief. I unfortunately cant affoord therepy 2x a week and massages, so I can only try to mask the pain and it sucks. I feel for anyone with a neck injury. I have a herniated disk and severe nerve compression.
