The late Mel Siff, who was the author of such an important book Supertraining, took this concept to a new level. The idea was following days of max intensity, the athletes were to take a shower with the hottest temperature they could stand for 3 minutes. Then switch to the coldest temerperature they could stand for 1 minute. Then rotate 3 total times ending with the cold. This was suppost to be a great regeneration technique used to shock the CNS and help promote better and faster recovery.
Mel Siff believed it was extremely important to submerge all limbs and especially the neck and to incorporate movement during this time in each temperature condition. He had an 8 foot jacuzzi right next to a large inground swimming pool that was ice water since this was in Colorado. The jacuzzi had steel bars all through it at all depths so the athletes could hold them selves in anyway needed to do such things as bicycle kick or different types of stretches. They would then jump into the swimming pool and swim, jump, etc. Siff was even known to mix things up a bit and have his athletes roll around in the snow even! (God after tough pulling and squatting i'd love to have access to an 8 foot deep jacuzzi.)
I've even read on this board (don't have access to the original thread as it's no longer up) that touched upon the subject of cold temperatures over a short period of time activating the testes into testosterone production. (Such as cooling the body down after a hot day or ending contrast shower with ice cold water) Again I don't have the specifics involved but knew it was linked to higher testosterone production from the testes and I hope someone can help locate such info.
I know for a fact that my (member) has been extremely flushed with blood and extremely erect following such showers when my body has gotten back to a normal temperature and it's a nice warm day outside. I've noticed this especially in the summer time walking outside after ending my shower with a cold treatment , then lying down for a second or two and boom, watch out !!!!!!!! The libido has been extremely high following such events and that has been evident on multiple occasions. After speaking with a highly respected female member on this board about this topic, as I knew of her biology background, we were talking about if this had any effect similar on women. (with recovery as well as possible libido improvement). If anyone can help , I'd almost love to somehow accumulate some data and see if this is something that is an improvement in all areas talked about in men and women.
