Default Lettuce vs. Lettuce

Lettuce is lettuce right? Does it matter if it comes in a bag or is a fresh head you prepare yourself? Stupid question, I know, but it was a though that popped into my head today on the way home from the gym.

I don't really get what you are asking... as long as you rinse it off good and it isn't rotting it should all be the same.

... that said I still find lettuce (e.g. iceberg) to be nutritionally void and prefer to use spinach.

Lettuce is riddle with an opiate-like chemical, primarily in the milky sap. I typically avoid the stuff.

What I mean sassy is you know how lettuce comes in the bags already chopped up. Like a five lettuce mix or something like that. And it also comes in a "head". I was just making sure there was no difference between the two. I always wash it, never know who had their hands on it and the chemicals that are on it.

Yeah definitely wash it regardless, they had some news articles about the cleanliness (or lack there of) of the "pre-washed" bagged lettuce.

Like Sassy said, try baby spinach, comes bagged, tastes good, lots more nutrition value.

Either way you can't really know what has been done to the stuff - the only major diff is in the processing for the bag - even the head of lettuce you don't know what they've sprayed it with so any fruit or veggies I'd be sure to wash thoroughly.

I've gotten sick off of bagged salad twice - I won't go near it again.

It takes less than 2 minutes to chop up some romaine lettuce and if you store it in stainless bowl, dried andcovered with foil it will keep crisp; so you could chop the the whole head at a time and use it over a few days.

I prefer homegrown lettuce from the garden, but if that isn't in season, I go with bagged spinach for mostly the reasons stated above. I also like the texture of spinach more than lettuce now.

in general, its good to wash any fruit and vegetable before eating/preparing it, whether you bough it bagged or pulled it from the ground yourself
