Yeah, as a rule, it's always harder for the guy under the weights.
Congrats. That's more than I ever did in my life.

It was a clean set. That's what I find impressive more than anything. No help on lift off. Nice form. Made it look easy.

It seems like most gyms with heavy dumbbells go up to 150 lbs but it is rare to see anything heavier. From the perspective of the owner it makes sense since dumbbells are at least $1/lb and buying a pair of 180 lbs dumbbells would be an expensive investment for something that very few people will actually use.

You don't know how lucky you are to have 160's. We only have 125's and this is what I have to go threw every week lol

Wow... how well does the duct tape hold?

The gym where I usually train only has 100's but luckily the gym with the 160's is only about 30 minutes away.

Duct tape. That's awesome.

If I could figure out how to sneak the 180's at my gym out, I'd send them to you. No one ever uses them.

As a side note or should I call it a complaint.....one thing that drives me nuts these days is these newer modern day gyms. I cant stand these rubber plates and rubber dbs that they are putting in all the gyms now days. When I want to drive iron, I have to drive 20 some on miles to this old school meat head gym I go to just to feel that medal. Kinda blows. :dunno:

I can imagine the face of the UPS guy as he drags that box up the sidewalk... :weightlifter:

I was training at a Lifestyle Family Fitness... everything was coated in rubber. I actually injured my wrist because their bar's don't have any knurling and I lost control on a power clean.

Decided to set things up at home...

It is great, other than the heat factor (90 degrees outside = garage steam room).

I decided to rent one, it is $40/month.

Someone on another site bought a 12x16 outdoor shed and built a gym in there, looked pretty cool.

It explodes when you let them down. Have partially re-tape every set but do what you gotta do.

Went a little heavier this week. 175's for 6 on flat...dropped down to 155's for 14, then 12.

Here's the 175's lol

I can only imagine what the people around you are thinking when you are taping up the dumbbells, and then seeing them explode apart when you drop them down.

Everybody just stairs as I'm taping them...especially because it's an LA Fitness and the vast majority of people are Average in terms of strength and build. They look at me like I have a third eye as I'm taping. I try to let them down as gently as I can but they still pop and plates fly off like shrapnel.

That is funny.

I had a trainer/manager at an LA Fitness in Florida tell me that I was not allowed to do push press because I was using too much weight and it was dangerous.

yep, last fall when I was DLing heavy heavy...a friend took me to his planet fitness and while they have a "no deadlifting" sign I only had on 495 and before I even approached it I was told that I can't do it because I was going to "hurt myself AND OTHERS"...how exactly will I hurt others? who knows but the girl told me that I couldn't do it and waited there while I stripped it down. then, the kicker was, once I was walking out with my friend the manager asked me if I was a personal trainer and insisted I wasn't allowed back without a valid membership. That gym has since closed down and was bought over by World Gym.

There is a Gold's in South Florida that is supposed to be 'hardcore' and one of the trainers there told me that I was not allowed to deadlift because I was bending the bars, yet there was some clown doing shrugs in the rack next to me with 405 and dropping it in the rack. Deadlifting will not bend a commercial bar no matter how much weight you have on there because the weight is distributed properly, rack pulls are where you get into trouble. I think that he was just mad because I had pulled 585x5 @ 210 lbs and was stronger than the 'bodybuilders' there.

aren't those 7' Olympic bars built to withstand up to 1500lbs?

The ratings on bars is sometimes meaningless, but most commercial bars can take quite a beating.

I have never bent a bar or seen one bend while doing deadlifts from the floor, but have seen a lot of bars bent by people doing rack pulls.

that's probably a static rating but as shakes said bending a bar deadlift is just about impossible but rackpulls or shrugs dropped back into the rack will bend a bar real quick

Well lets pinpoint where you guys are thinking the bar is bending. I'm under the impression that it's bending in the middle and I haven't ever seen a bar bend in the middle and be permanently bent. I have seen the sides where the plates are loaded bent and destroyed, and by rack pulls.

GTLifter
07-09-2010, 12:38 PM
yea that's what we are saying, dropping the bar onto the racks causes it to bend towards the ends
