Ok, so I have been away from the site for a couple of weeks, partly due to illness. I come back, the site was wiped out, Young Guns banned so let me just come clean - I have not worked out in 3 weeks.

Ok, so on Saturday I had to do some aerobics video with the wife.

On Sunday I started my "300" circuit again, but pulled my back in the deadlifts. It got worse in the day and by evening I could not stand up straight. I am doing better now and may be doing something tomorrow.

Yup Kabeetz

Saturday, February 23

Like a good husband I did the next set of the aerobics videos with the wife. I added 15lb dumbells isntead of the stretch bands. This video was 70 minutes long and it is not easy for me. I do not have the flexibility in my body to do the things they want you to do. Not only can I not stretch and touch my toes, I can barely touch half-shin. Anyway my wife has a lot of weight to lose and it is important for me to support her.

Later, I did my 300 circuit training workout.
50 pull-ups, 50 deadlifts @135lb, 50 pushups using my new power pushup handles, 50 box jumps @ 22 inches, 50 window wipers @ 135 lb, (most hated exercise for me) 50 35lb kettlebell snatches each arm. These were broken into sets of 10 where I do 10 reps, move on to the next exercise and loop through 5 total sets. Pull-ups were 10, 10, 10 8 and 8 though.

This is the problem with Huckabee and family values... you end up doing aerobics videos with your wife!

Cardio is cardio and doing things togehter can be motivating and a heck of a lot of fun.

Nice 300 workout...I know I couldn't do it.

How long did you use the 5x5 and what did you think of it?

BigJimCalhoun
03-06-2008, 05:11 AM
I used the 5x5 for about 11 or 12 weeks at one point. I liked it and I was able to make my best gains ever. I benched 227 x 5 which was a bid deal for me.

The 5x5 seems to be best for people who want to get big. I really don't want that.

My wife and I are doing the P90 program. After that, we will move to p90 masters and then to P90x, the one in the infomercials.

The one we are doing is more basic. My wife needs to start that this level more than I do, but since I have neglected stretching and abdominal work for 20 years, I am benefiting from it. P90 has levels 1/2 and 3/4. The P90 Masters have levels 5/6. Not sure what p90X has. The program we are currently on moves at a pretty good pace and I do put up a sweat.

Tue: P90 masters (level 5/6 cardio)
Wed P90 level 3/4 sculpt
Thur P90 masters (level 5/6 cardio)
Friday P90 masters (level 5/6 sculpt)

For the most part I am liking this. There is a lot of streching and I can now reach down to the tops of the tongues of my shoes, whereas when I started I could only stretch to mid-shin.

I think it's great you're giving the p90x a go. I will be sure to follow along bro.

Not p90x yet, P90 masters now. I have lots of work to do before the X. I need abdominal improvement, coordination, balance, stretching etc.

Today,
P90 masters 5/6 cardio + Ab 200 (20 reps x 10 different styles of crunches. I am burning about 550+ calories according to my heart-rate monitor.

yesterday, no workout due to late day at work

Tuesday : went running for the first time in 5 weeks. A weather front was coming in and the wind was gusting. My cold-weather, exercised-induced asthma kicked in, but I kept a decent pace for 2.7 miles. I was coughing all night and into the next morning due to the inflamation in the lungs.

Monday, P90 masters 5/6 sculpt?????

It snowed here today, so much so that myself and half the office worked from home. The weather should be improving and I need to start putting some miles on the pavement to keep myself running-fit. I also need to stay with the P90 for overall fitness. I am still weighing in at 194 in the AM. I need to slowly drop 15 pounds ,but the junk food habit is killing me. Last week I downed a large 800+ calorie hersey bar in 10 min at work. This week, I bought a bag of gum drops hoping they would last two days, but they only lasted a hour or so. We also have a trendy cafe across the street that makes nice cookies and muffins, so it is either donuts, or muffins/cookies that do me in.

Friday, P90 masters 5/6 sculpt.

Saturday,
Ran 4.3 miles, first time out in a while. 687 calories burned, ave heart rate 83%, max 93%

Did some:
bench press ( 5 x 95, 115, 135, 165, 185, 205)
military press ( 5 x 80, 95, 105, 115)
dead lift ( 5 x 135, 165, 195, 225)
I have been off the heavy lifting for a while and my numbers show it.

Went running in the afternoon. Did about a 2 mile warmup, then ran this hill (see pic) 4 times at a nice pace, then ran 0.7 home. Note the snow we have in April here.
640 calories burned, ave heart 79%, max 93%

Today
The wife and I started P90x, the one some of you may have seen in the infomertials. The first workout was Chest and Shoulders. This workout consists of a lot of pushups and pull-ups - so many that I needed to go to my knees for the pushups near the end. After about 57 minutes of chest and shoulder, you move to 16 minutes of abdominal work. In all you are supposed to do almost 350 reps of situps, crunches, etc. I did far less. It was a hard workout for me.

Below is a current picture of me. I didn't think I looked that fat as the lighting in our master bathroom throws some nice shadows that I just can't seen to replicate in Photoshop. I now know what they mean when they say TV puts 15 lbs on you. I am 5'-10.5" @ 192lb. Based on the pic I think I need to get to 175 or lower.

Today
P90X Chest and arms. Some of my sets were less than before, others more. I do ok on the push-ups, pull-ups are harder. For example, I will do 30 pushups as fast as I can using push up bars, but then I need to immediately do as many pull-ups as I can. I have always been a fan of rest after a sets.

After the workout did the P90X Abripper X. Stomach is getting stronger. I have been muting the video and listening to "BPM" and "The System" which I think are XM Satellite Radio through our Direct TV subscription. They play the same friggen-songs every night on BMP when I am listening - DJ Armando to be specific. He was even saying last week that the show is not a tape and was demonstrating changing the volume, which one can do with a tape BTW.

Anyway, here is a pic of me. Lots of weight to lose.

P90X Shoulders and Arms.

5 groups x 3 exercises each x 2 sets each exercise. I moved up in weight for many of the exercises

After that AbRipperX (16 minutes of pure hell)

BTW, the same friggen song was on again yesterday and today, and monday, and last week.
Anyway, this is that song that they absolutely need to play every day during my workout

P90X YogaX

My hatred for all things and people yoga has not subsided and it is hard to start a video and see that 93 minutes later it will complete and you are going to hate all 93 minutes. What I did during this program would make most yoga people angry. I switched the sound over from the video to the XM satellite stations on Direct TV and constantly cycle between 70s, 80s, 90s, BMP and The System. I did not do any of the breathing stuff, etc. Oh well...... I heard a lot of songs I have not heard in a long time such as that Convoy truck song, Rico Suave by Gerado, Madonna. etc

Ran a 5k today in my neighborhood. Came in 6th place out of maybe 120 people. Potentially, I could have come in 3rd but I had a bad day. I vomited 5 times at the water station at the completion of the run. I had cramps all through my stomach and lower back and my heart rate only hit 91% max which is less than I work out at sometimes. My exercise-induced asthma kicked in again also. I was a total wreck.

The race was given to celebrate national trails day and was on a new piece of open space on a butte that the town acquired. The first 1/2 mile or more as uphill, which in reality is bigger than the pic below leads you to believe.

Here are some pics (note that the houses in the pic are not my subdivision - I am not wealthy as those houses imply)

So are you using the P90X system and using the 5x5 program ????
Matt~
We were using the P90x, but sold it on E-Bay. It is a good program for some, but not for my wife and I. The workouts take a lot of time and if I start working out at 5:30pm, I may not finish until 7:00 pm and by then it is getting too late to eat dinner as a family and get our son ready for bed.

The program does use a lot of higher reps with lighter weight, along with yoga, kempo karate and plyometrics. I did lose 8 lb and some of that was muscle. We did 8 of the 12 weeks, but I was away on week 9 and my wife was away on week 10 and we sort of lost interest. The program is hard too with lots of pull-ups, push-ups, abs, etc.

I am back on the 5x5 again and have come nearly to my previous max on bench and have passed my previous military press and dead lifts from last years 5x5.

Once I finish the 5x5 I will try to do some sort of hybrid with cross training and heavy weights. BTW I gained back all the weight I lost. Some of what I gained back is muscle and some is fat.

Today
Week 7 - Day 3 of my 5x5
I have not worked out since Sunday as I was away for work. I travelled with a work-a-hollic that would work until 4 am, then get up late. He would also leave the office late and feel obligated to eat at expensive restaraunts with tasty, but unhealthy food such as shrimp, halibut clam chowder.

I did run a little, but not really, and I did not have access to free weights where I was, so I did not do day 2 of week 7.

Squat:
5 x 105
5 x 140
5 x 165
5 x 190
3 x 220
8 x 165

Bench Press
5 x 115
5 x 145
5 x 170
5 x 200
3 x 230 - (did 5 reps and this is a new PR for me. :woot:
8 x 170 ( did 12 reps)

Seated Close-grip cable Rows, dips, barbell curl superset
For those of you that may not have read earlier, I have some back issues and do not do the Pendlay row, so instead I do these. Today I moved the two support exercises to immediately after the cable rows and added two additional sets of the support exercises to match the number of sets of the rows. I did this mostly to break up the boredom. My arms seem to be lagging behind also. (I know some of you 5x5 strict constuctionists are really angry by now)
Close-Grip Cable rows 5 x 90
8 dips
curl 8 x 95

Close-Grip Cable rows 5 x 140
7 dips
curl 8 x 95

Close-Grip Cable rows 5 x 160
10 dips
curl 7 x 95

Close-Grip Cable rows 5 x 180
8 dips
curl 4 x 95

5 x 200
11 dips
curl 8 x 95

So, I have maybe 7 weeks or so left in this program. I am not increasing as fast as the standard incrementation. I am increasing my bench by 5lb each week, but the chart shows that I should have been at 232, not 230 for today. I am hiting my goals though. What is a realistic goal for my bench and squat? I am going to shoot for 250lb on each. I hit my squat goal a lot easier then my bench today and my back seems to be holding out. Aside from a very little dose of doctor-prescribed T, I am natural. Does anyone ever read this?

Did what was my last day of the 5x5 on Sunday. I have stalled for a 2 weeks now, but it was a good run and I made some really good gains.

I ran today, about two miles and did awful. I need some better diet discipline and things will turn around.

I take a certification test in the AM tomorrow and once that is over with, assuming I pass, I will feel better. I don't need to take the exam, but I interviewed internally for a different position, which I did not get, and had told them that I would pass the exam.
