A friend of mine at work asked me to design a workout program for him that would yield strength, power, endurance, explosive power, agility, etc. Right off the top of my head I figured the best approach would be to incorporate different prinicples from a variety of training approaches (power lifting, plyometrics, traditional resistance training, flexibility training, etc.) Anybody have any thoughts on the subject?

From what he's saying he needs a football program. Something that incorporates field drills, powerlifting, and olympic lifting. Thats the best I can do as i'm not qualified to give you an effective routine on that front.

My thoughts, too.

I hadn't considered that, but that sounds pretty good. It doesn't sound like I was too far off.

Depending on what kind of condition he is in now, it may be helpful to break up his training into phases. A phase with lots of squatting and pulling for strength, then for explosion and conditioning, cut back the squats to maybe once a week, drop deadlifts (and replace them with more olympic lifts IF he knows how to do them), plyometrics and sprint work , etc.

I vote circuit training with a heavy day of olympic-style lifting added in one day a week.
I know I bring up circuits a lot, but T Cake had me doing circuits for about 7 months prior to my triathlon. My strength, endurance, stamina, speed, and power all dramatically increased. I highly recommend it to anybody who has the self discipline to kick their own ass for 60-90 minutes a day.

A good suggestion Ms Tweak. You ahve the log to prove that circuit training has worked for you.
Swole...You could throw in some strongman training. Sled drag..tire flips...truck pulls. Endurance and strength..not to mention brutal.
BiggT and CT have it for you (your friend)..IMHO He's obviously wanting an athletic/sports conditioning style of training and thats was those two hit on.
