Just wanted to vent a little about how much injuries suck...

I tore my ham 2 months ago, and it's still not better. I can't do legs, can't even do any more cardio than a light walk w/ no incline.
I finally went to a sports MD today, which was a total waste of time. He told me I was looking at another 4 months healing time! WTF?! Is there anything you guys can suggest to speed this up?

I'm so freakin' depressed about this. I wanted to have a great offseason and really add some mass to my legs.

I can think of lots of fun cardio. Nothing I can post though.
What he said is probably right. 4 months of resting them.
You can do the rowing machine or have T-cake give you lifting circuits. That's cardio build in.

I'll have to find a training partner first! LOL

This sucks.

Shoot...pick me!

YOu can try hot and cold compresses to aid in healing quicker. 10 minutes hot..10 minutes cold for about 30 minutes. It will help.

How bad did you tear it? Picts? I tore mine really good one year playing softball. Put me on crutches...but using hot and cold I healed up with in a month and was able to do cardio.

Now deads would be out of the question!

I've been doing the hot/cold, and my chiro has been doing ultrasound therapy on it. This just seems ridiculous to me. I've never had anything take this long to heal. I did just finish a 5 mo. treatment of accutane a couple weeks ago, so that may have delayed my recovery.

I don't think the initial injury was THAT bad. I mean it hurt like hell when I did it (doing a split), but it wasn't that bad afterwards. I think I screwed it up even more like 3 weeks later when I thought I was cool to do squats.

It's right at the ischial tuberosity....right under my bum.

I am 32 and when i was in my late teens i suffered an injury to my right upper hamstring right underneath the bum. It wasn't anything sudden but i do remember when i was stretching for Tae Kwon Do it hurt pretty good. I thought it would go away and because of the area of the injury i was a dumb shit and neglected to go to a physiotherapist. One day it felt pretty good as i was jogging down the street, so i bursted into a sprint and bang there it was full force again.
This injury has stuck with me all of these years and i just had to accept it after this long. If somehow you have suffered the same injury as i have a long time ago, i stress to you to really take it easy for a long time and keep seeking professional help.
Some of the most noticeable things about my injury is that when i walk up the stairs my right leg produces this loud snapping sound. It could be something else but don't think so. My right hamstring is weaker and a bit smaller. Also, it actually hurts to drive sometimes. The constant little shifts from gas to brake aggravates it.
Be Cautious....

I keep hearing stories like this.

Has anyone heard of prolotherapy? Does it work for muscle tears?

One of the Doctors here has recommedned and spoke on Prolotherapy. Says she's had tremendous results. Even had her father do it...Now I can't remember for what though.

She is well published in our area and well respected. May be worth a shot as it states it can be used for rotator cuff tears.

here is some information..not her site though...

That sucks moose balls :(

I have partial tear in my rotator, for which I was prescribed 6 weeks of PT. I've completely changed my training so I'm doing nearly no upper body except for my 'core training' I'm doing w/ a friend of mine (not free) 2x / week, escalating to 3x/week. Its replacing my PT because I can do that stuff at home instead of spending an hour w/ a stretchy resistance band at their facility. There was no total commitment that I wouldn't need surgery - I met w/ the ortho re: my MRI and she basically said there was nothing hanging off so there was really no reason for surgery. But some other friends in the know suggest having some peeps they know review the MRI. (I still have to get a copy of the MRI...)

I am getting in 2 days of leg training but it also is low weight / high rep because I can't use my upper body to support too much weight. And lots of cardio.

If I'm able to, I'm looking to sign up for training for a 100 mile ride in Palm Springs in February -- this will make me go face my nemesis, the SPIN CLASS.... :ohnoes:

But definitely different training.

Tears & stuff just do not heal quickly. And though it doesn't feel completely debilitating (like you're bedridden or walking w/ a cane), if you do try to work around it, chances are high that you'll screw it up further... What a mindfuck...

Really sorry you're having to go thru this, but its also par for the course for most any athlete. I guess one of those things that is only useful for "building character"....

Tore my hammie very slightly at center mass last fall...there was only a bruise the size of a quarter and I only did surg tubing work and very light hamstring decellerations (Lift the weight with the good leg and let it down with the bad leg) for about a month...then we added things like lay on your back and put your feet up on an agility ball and dig your heals into the ball and roll it several inches towards your bunz .... lots of reps, no real weight for the first 2 months. Hot / cold therapy and stretching was a given and a couple sessions with the ultrasound and we were seeing progress.

I came back better than ever BG....just had to go super slow. I am bummed to hear your not having more luck finding some progress at 4-6 weeks :rose:

sorry to hear about your injuries. I have never torn anything, but I do have this shoulder pain and elbow pain that keeps recurring!

the elbow is more a stress factor, because there is a ton of numbness and pulsating - hence I need to stop worrying about stuff.

The shoulder that is just a injury from last year that comes back like wildfire every now and then. It usually flares bad on chest day

healing thoughts girl... hope it heals up quick!

Take a look at this

The Physician and Sportsmedicine: High Hamstring Tendinopathy in Runners (http://www.physsportsmed.com/issues/2005/0505/fredericson.htm)

I was able to talk to the one of the guys who did the study. Once it is adequatley healed, about the only way you can repair the ham is to do eccentric exercises, 3 times a day, 1 set of 50. He suggestest one leg RDLs.

I will talk more later. I also have a power point presentation that I will try to dig up.

As I just told Itsallgenetics, come back to fast, hurt yourself worse, and you will be out of the game longer.

If it makes you feel any better, both of my hams have a bunch of chronic tears in them, and my left ischial tuberosity is often sore, esp when I have to sit for a long time. Sucks. Stretching actually makes me hurt worse.

What a mindfuck indeed! You're right...I don't even realize how bad it is until I try to do something with it. Even a walk on the treadmill puts me back in pain.
I guess I'll have to do like you're doing and just find another kind of training/goal for the time being. It's hard to do really anything without a leg though.
At this point I think I'd trade my character for a good ham. LOL

Be sure to get good advice from your doc, maybe a 2nd opinion. I'm frustrated because I got my diagnosis & recommendation for PT instead of surgery from the head of sports medicine at Stanford, and yet most of the "experienced" people I've talked to just say you don't have a tendon tear and not have surgery. So I'll be looking for a 3rd opinion.

And now today, I'm sitting here w/ comparable pain on both shoulders - its like sympathy pain on the left side for the diagnosed right side. WTF??? LOL!

Yeah, the doc I went to was a total douche. He did refer me to a PT, but like you said...I can do that stuff at home. I might go to another, but I doubt there's anything they can do. I feel like most docs don't care unless they can cut you open. My chiro has been very helpful, so I'll stick with that and take some of the suggestions I've gotten here.

Ultrasound, musclestem, massage, heat and ice.
