Alright, here's where I am now:

5'11"
250
Incline: 365
Back Squat: 430x5
BTN Push Press: 315x1
Deadlift: 610x1
Clean: haven't done them since July '07, PR is 340 though

Here's where I'd like to be:

5'11" (well, 6'3" would be pretty cool, but this is the only number not changing)

255-260
Incline: 405
Back Squat: 475x5
BTN Push Press: 315x5
Deadlift: 650
Clean: just to do them consistently

I'll train front squats pretty hard in the mix too, but no goal as I am not in the business of cramming 10lbs of shit into a 5lb bag. The incline is a bit ambitious, but everything else I think is pretty doable.

I am gonna be training M-W-F, 2-3 main lifts.

Lifted yesterday:

Mon. 2/11/08

Back Squat: 135x10-135x10-135x10-225x10-315x5-365x5-405x5-430x5

Good Morning: 185x10-225x5-255x5-285x5

Incline Bench: 135x15-225x5-275x5-300x1-315x1-335x1-365x1 (ties a PR)-285x8

Messed around w/ some pulldowns and called it a night.

Weighed 250 even

Nice lifts, btw

I needed them to warm up my knees. It was minus 1 outside! Plus, 135 and 225 don't count, they're the fun stuff.

Worked out this morning at 8 AM because it was the only time I could go. It was freezing outside and I was tired as hell. But, I downed a big bowl of wheaties (about 3 servings at least) and a couple eggo waffles and headed out.

BTN Push Press: 135 x 5 for a bunch of sets-185x5-205x5-225x5-245x5-255x5

Cleans: I did a million triples...seriously maybe 20 sets with 115 and 135. My form was surprisingly not as horrendous as I was expecting for not doing them in over 6 months , I guess it's like riding a bike, once you can do it you never forget. I did get winded though.

Some abs and called it a day.

Pretty good man, I cut back A LOT. I cut out the incline dumbells and dumbell militaries and the last 3 weeks I just did inclines on Mon and PP's on Fri. It helped out a ton.

awesome. tough to do but it always gets me back on track.. i think im just about there myself. after that last shitty ME bench day i took my next ME day as a 5x5 and the xtra rep day as a feeder and have gotten TONS of sleep lately so im hopin for somethin good come ME bench day tomarrow.
im feelin better in general as a matter of fact. wakin up easier, feelin motivated and energetic. aches n pains seem to be dissapearing. its actually kinda weird. must be a combo of things.

It's good to be seeing the old BiggT back and pushing the lifts into new territory. It was a shock to see you posting in the mid-220s.

Best of luck on hitting the goals.

You down graded from Hollister to the Gap??? shame on you

I actually almost used Hollister for my journal title, it was just a last second decision.

Just got back from the gym

Cleans: up to 185, maybe 30-40 total reps, I didn't really count, all were very easy and I didn't have to dip much at all to catch, I'm just glad to be doing these again.

Front Squat: 135x a bunch- 185x5-225x5-275x5-305x3-335x5-355x3

Flat Bench: 135x20-225x5-275x5-315x5-345x5-315x8

Some hammer curls to finish. Weighed in at a pretty lean 251. Preworkout fuel was a bunch of eggo waffles with peanut butter, it worked pretty well.

I actually almost used Hollister for my journal title, it was just a last second decision.

Sure it was. I can see you now in between hours and hours of Warcraft trying to come up w/ the perfect log title. Not to catchy, and gay, but just cool enough. Fag.....

OK - so are we ever going to see any 'real' lifts again? Not a power version, but a pure, unadulterated Clean and Jerk... or even possible, dare I say it... a Snatch?

I know you have to miss them. Your back squat is there, and your PP's are there.... (not sure why you keep wanting to lay down and do lifts, possibly you are getting lazy in your old age. It would be nice to see you tie it together and see where you really are these days.

I know for me if I don't do the full movements at least once a week they go in the crapper. Regardless of my progression on any of the so called compound lifts.

+2 w/ BW and CS... I cried a bit when I saw 220, then I ran (walked) tot he gorcery store and saw the loads of chocolate milk in reserves and decided I only cared about my BW.

Never knew you were 5'11. BiggT is right at 245+.

So how about at least a Squat Clean or 2?

AL, squat versions of the lifts will be coming. With the cleans, I am just gonna keep adding weight until it gets heavy enough to squat under. I was surprised with how good my pull and catch was, arms nice and straight and good positioning. Snatches will come soon. And, yeah, I'm 5'11 and some change.

BW, I am still looking for a good fish and chips joint in MI. There are some at home in PA that I will hit in Apr. if I can't get any out here.

Halfway, on a serious note. I love inclines and I think they're a great lift. They are a great functional strength builder as they carry over well to real life. Not as good as a push press, but the trade-off is you can handle more weight. In terms of helping overall 'pressing power', they are great for overhead lifts. I don't think they're the greatest for helping the bench. From my experience, flat bench carries over well to other presses. When my flat bench is trained, I can get on the incline and hit a PR within a few sessions. With flats, if I want a big bench, I just need to train it, nothing carries over, save for maybe declines.

What I have discovered it boils down to is overload. You can overload the pressing muscles for a strict overhead with PPs, PPs always make my strict overhead go up, the reverse doesn't hold true. Incline carries over to strict overheads and PPs because you overload those muscles. Flats carry over to inclines because you've overloaded the muscles responsible for inclines . . . again the reverse isn't true. And, declines (I know you personally like these) carry over to flats. A lot of guys hate declines, but I think they are coming from a strictly physique point of view. I like them a lot when used correctly, which for me is to overload pressing muscles over a legit range of motion to get some carry-over to a "better", more functional press.

So really, the less functional the lift, the more weight you can use to overload the movers, and the more carry-over you get to a more functional lift.

That's how it's always been for me anyway.

I will train the incline as long as I think I can get better at just training it, then switch the main lying press to flats probably.

First off it was a grapetini - I can't get enough of them. Second you're the one that forgot to buy me a XS. You know I like to look mad jacked in my youtube vids.

Have you considered running for President? I would vote for you.

You mean to tell me you don't need a 4 sec TUT while doing pinky-up side laterals to overload your medial delt muscles?

Got in a pretty good workout tonight

Snatch: LONG time since I have done these, stayed at 135, of course I power snatched them because it's 135 and I just didn't have to get low to catch, but I did an overhead squat after I caught every one.

Front Squats: bunch of warm-ups with 135- 225x5-275x5-300x5-335x5-360x3

Cleans: worked up to some triples with 225, still don't have to get very low to catch these, but they're coming back. Next time, these come before squats how I always do them, I just figured I'd squat first since these are kind of light now.

There was a group of teenagers watching me clean and they had a million technique questions, so I ended up giving a little clinic/demo for them, I probably did a total of 50 singles with 135 and 185 with little rest between each one. I broke a pretty good sweat.

Back Squat: 135 x a lot- 225x5-315x5-365x5-405x5-445x5

Incline Bench: 135 x a lot- 225x5-275x5-295x5-315x5-325x5-275x10

Pendlay Row: 135 x a lot- 225x5-255x5-285x5

Weighed-in at 251. Had a pretty good workout. I am gonna throw Pendlay rows back in, any other type of row just doesn't do it for me.

I'll post the diet today just for fun

Meal 1- 4 whole egg omlette with ham
2 slices of whole wheat toast
a BIG bowl of wheaties, maybe 3 servings
close to a quart of milk

Meal 2- 2 Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches
2 bananas
a quart of milk

Meal 3- half a pound of lean ground beef
a bag of boil in bag brown rice
salad
some milk

Meal 4- 2 eggo waffles with peanut butter and honey
some gatorade

then worked out

post workout, I had quite a bit of chocolate milk

Meal 5- 5 whole egg fritatta with potatoes and onions
it doesn't go with the meal, but I had a bag of green beans when I was done
washed it down with a rice krispie treat, lol

Where's that squat in terms of effort and PR territory? 445x5 usually gets a comment from me as to how hernia-inducing it feels :tongue2:

BiggT
02-26-2008, 03:39 PM
Z, thanks for checking in man. My flat bench always seems to be 30lbs more than my incline no matter what. It's been like that since I was in high school.

LJ, the squat was hard. It was a grinder. And I probably took 5 breaths between reps 3 and 4 and another 5 breaths between reps 4 and 5. I felt so good afterwards to be done with it though that I left the gym on a high note. I doubt I could go to 455 next week though. My all-time 5 rep PR is 465x5 that I did in '06, I've also done 500x 3 back in '05 which was kind of a freak thing, I just had one of those days, and I've done a single at 500 so many times over the years I lost count. There won't be a back squat PR this run though I'm afraid.

About all you can say to that video is wow.

I worked out tonight.

Power Cleans: Singles all the way up to 275, no problems. Then 3x3 with 255, no problems with that either. Then a squat clean with 295 that I could have power cleaned. I had one of those days with cleans where everything felt perfect.

BTN Push Press: 135 x a bunch-185x5-225x5-255x5-275x5

Jump Shrug: 315x5-405x5-495x5-550x5-405x20

I had a good night. Some guy walked up to me when I was push pressing and he was holding the pussy pad or maxi pad or whatever you call it (that foam thing that zips around the bar) and he asked if I was going to use it. I almost said "Do I look like a gaping, wet vagina to you?" But, then I realized that he probably asked because he wanted to use it and I am not in the business of insulting people and giving them poor self esteem, so I just said "No, man, it's all you." He then went over to the smith machine and used it for calf raises.

I'll post the diet later when I have more time.

Awesome cleans and presses bro.... there's a guy at my gym who is pretty scrawny but his mom is close with my mom and every time I do any heavy lifting he comes up to me and compliments me and says that he could never do that kind of weight and it would aggravate his hernia and he doesn't have the back to be able to handle a loaded barbell on it etc....

I keep trying to convert him... telling him there is nothing he can't do and that it doesn't matter what weights you start at you have to train to get better...

Trying to convert one gaping wet vagina at a time.

nice work brotha, keep bangin. next time make "for the fun of it" 405.

I worked out today.

Front Squat: 135 x a bunch of warm-ups, 225x5-275x5-295x5-315x5-345x5

Flat Bench: 135 x a bunch-225x5-275x5-315x5-335x5-350x5-395x1 (just for the fun of it)

Felt kind of blah, strength was there though. Weighed 252.

BiggT

Zach, I have never had bad knees or problems over the years, never any kind of traumatic injury or anything. But for the last 10 years or so, I'll get a flare up of tendonitis with overuse. The patella tendons. Like "jumper's knee". It is hard to predict it. Some training cycles, I've squatted 3-4 times a week, plus full versions of the olympic lifts and it is fine, others I can squat twice a week and it bothers me.

Usually it starts when I have to sit for an extended period, and when I stand up and stretch it feels better.

It has never been bad enough to need to take even Advil or anything, just annoying sometimes and takes a little while to warm-up. I've been told it's just an overuse thing though. Sometimes it'll go away for over a year.

I should probably be thankful though because other than that, I have no real nagging issues.

Wednesday 3/5/07

Clean & Jerk: Bunch of warm-ups with power cleans, hang cleans, and squat cleans, and front squats, then C and J singles as follows:
135-165-185-205-215-225-235-245-255-265-275-285-295x2 singles (felt great to do these, if anybody is wondering, I've always used a power jerk)

Back Squat: 225x5-315x5-365x5-405x5-435x3-465x3

Incline Bench: (was gonna do flats, but fuck it, I wanted to push inclines for a while) . . . 135x20- 225x5-265x5-295x5-315x1-335x1-375x1 (PR)- 315x5 (was expecting 8 or so the way things were going, but i was shot at this point)

Weighed in at 250 (down 2 lbs despite stuffing myself all day every day, whoever said getting old slows your metabolism is lying, lol)

Post-workout nitrition:

Some chocolate milk
6 whole egg omlette with potatoes, Italian sausage, onions, mushrooms. Was supposed to be an omlette, but I was on the phone when I was making it and I fucked it up, so it was more like a scramble, but it tasted just the same.

I was winded as hell at the end. After the cleans with the sets at 275, 285, and 295 I was taking a good 4-5 breaths before I jerked, lol.

Yeah, my wrists felt a little worked the next day. I've also been doing my push presses from behind the neck, so it is the first time in a while I have put anything overhead from that position, so that probably played a role too.

Dynamic pressing has more carry over to strict pressing than the reverse. Plus he is doing them out of habit and as an accessory lift to the Snatch... assuming he ever does Snatches again.

i could never do any btn stuff. not flexibility mainly, but rather just serious gravel under foot sounding shoulder pain like i mentioned in craigs log.
id like to give db push presses a try soon tho as long as my ability to do db militaries continues painfree. maybe in time that'll fix whatever the issue is and allow me to go to Barbell militaries and/or push presses.

BiggT

That was a typo Fude, it was 335x5-345x5-355x5

GetJacked, I think BTN will help with any leg drive issues. From the front, a lot of people have problems because they can't rack the bar in a clean grip (across the delts and the wrists not supporting any of the weight), it is just a flexibility thing, but it will kill leg drive if you don't have the bar racked in the front and the lifter will push with the arms too soon and that limits poundage.

From BTN, you're naturally weaker the first several inches of the lift than from the front, so you're forced to use leg drive and the tendency is to only use the arms at the end of the lift, when they should be used to push the bar to lockout. The fact that there are no racking issues across the back makes the lift feel more natural. Plus, the bar is already behind your head in the proper position, you don't have to push it behind your head to lockout like with front presses.

AL, pure Oly lifters HATE bench work, lol. Being called lazy is pretty mild compared to what I've heard, lol. But, I will always be a meathead at heart and the bench is gonna stay.

Fude, the reason BTN work bothers you is probably the same reason Oly coaches hate benching. Years of heavy bench pressing and the mass that is acquired from it make the shoulder girdle extremely tight and inflexible. You can work through it and be a good bencher and have flexible shoulders though if you do BTN pressing or snatches or OH squats in the same cycle as bench presses. I never have a problem with flexibility when doing BTN work and Oly work with bench in the same training cycle.

There are NO benches in our gym, so benching would prove to be tough. Coach has called me things like "fat powerlifter", "lazy fat fuck", "lazy lifter"... the list goes on.

I've always been used to it from doing the olympic lifts. I've used over/under for deads in the past, but switched to the hook in college. I like it better, I think it keeps the bar closer to my body. Also, an added bonus is that I never have to even think about a bicep tear when straining with something heavy.

I think 585x5 SHOULD give someone a lot more than a 610 max, but I have never really trained DL singles, so I think it is kind of a thing where you're good at what you train for. I know a guy from the gym back home who can DL in the 700 range, but I can probably out pull him on a set of 5. I am going to train it in waves. DL every other week, 1 week 5's, the next 3's, the next up to a single and see if I can make the 1RM improve with the 5's.

Anyway, worked out last night 3/28/08

Power Clean: singles all the way up to 315, then 285x3x3

Flat Bench: 135 x a whole lot- 225 x5- 275x5-315x5-345x5-375x3-225 x 29 (in honor of next month's NFL draft, lol)

That was it, nice and efficient. Cleans were easy. The bench felt solid too.

PWO nutrition:

Chocolate milk, a 4 egg Omlette, and 6 slices of pizza and a salad. I know it doesn't go together, but I had the chocolate milk first, then the omlette, then the salad, then the pizza with more chocolate milk.

I know a guy from the gym back home who can DL in the 700 range, but I can probably out pull him on a set of 5.It seems like (as with so much else) there's some individual variation in this, too. I'm just like you in that I always train deads for multiple reps, but it seems like my 1RM is actually high by the standards of my rep PRs (both intuitively and based on those 1RM estimators).

But I think the 610x1/585x5 incongruence is somewhat the result of weight selection during the peaking workout after the phase when you did 585x5. I have little doubt you would've had a single at least in the 630s; IIRC you blew away ~605 then didn't quite get something 640-650ish.

Anyway, training and eating look great as always. How close is that front squat triple to a PR?

BiggT

Thanks, CS

The front squat ties a PR for a triple. I didn't make note of it, because I've tripled 385 on fronts a bunch of times in the past. Fronts feel good. My PR is 405x1 and I feel like I can get way past that in the near future.

Actually, I have a cell phone with a cam now, so I'll see what I can do.

Things are getting crazy at school. Finals are next week, so my plan is to lift hard one more time this week, then take finals week off and then I am home in PA for 2 weeks, then back here through the Summer, then going through the Fall, then clerking in the Spring of 09, then I've got the July 09 Bar Exam.

Here is the last 2 workouts:

Friday last week:

BTN Push Press: 135 x a lot- 185x5-225x5-275x1-295x3x3

Deadlift: 135 x a lot- 225x5-315x5-405x5-495x5-585x3 (I have a lot of gas left in the tank on these)

Pendlay Row: 225x5-295x5-325x5 (the 325 was HEAVY and I think is all I am capable of right now without bastardizing the lift, so I will have to do something different in place of these)

This is from yesterday:

Front Squat: 135 x a lot- 225x5-275x5-305x5-335x5-355x5

Flat Bench: 135 x a lot- 225x5-275x5-315x5-365x1-395x1-425 x miss (just not there yet)- 335 x 8

Some hammer curls and dumbell skulls and called it a night.

My plan is power cleans on Fri, then no lifting until around Apr. 22 or so.

I've taken some advice given to me by Beverly McD and I have been icing my elbows and bicep tendons at night while I study and they are feeling much better. If I add in the rest next week, I should be ready to hit some big numbers when I am home for 2 weeks.

I am back!

I'm in PA for 2 weeks. I went to the gym today after a 2 week layoff. Here is how it went down.

Flat Bench: a bunch of warm-ups, then 300x5x5

Back Squat: a bunch of warm-ups, then 225x5-295x5-315x5-335x5-365x5

Flat D-Bells: 95s x 3 sets of 12

I felt good and strong and nothing hurt. Everything felt pretty easy. I actually wish I held back a little on the back squats though because while I haven't trained in 2 weeks, I haven't back squatted in 4 weeks, so I am gonna be SORE tomorrow, and ungodly sore the day after tomorrow.

I weighed 248, so after not working out for two weeks and eating like a slob, I lost 5lbs.

Post-workout meal was chocolate milk, then a couple of pork BBQs and potato salad.

Alright, time for an update. I played a little pick-up basketball yesterday on top of being sore from squats and I was really feeling my hamstrings this morning. I went into the gym and started to warm-up on cleans, and on a set at 185 I pulled under into a full front squat and felt both hamstrings pop. I pulled them pretty good, no discoloration or anything serious, I am thinking just sore for 4-5 days, so I improvised and did what I could do . . .

Strict Standing overhead press to the front: 135 x a lot- 185x5-205x5- 225x3x3 (I was actually pretty pumped up about 225x3x3 on strict overheads)

Chest-Supported Row: worked up to 5 plates x 5, then 4 plates x 12 to finish. I do these fairly strict over a big range of motion and I don't get caught up on poundages because every apparatus is different. I've manhandled 6 plates on some and felt like death with 4 plates on others, it just depends on the leverages of the apparatus, which is why I am not crazy about these, but Pendlays were out of the question today.

I called it a day after this, I'll keep posted on the hamstrings.

Scarlett

There was no squatting today, but it was really tempting though. The hamstrings feel a lot better, no bruising or discoloration and they aren't bothering me just going through the day. I just think another day or two without irritating them would probably be best though, I had to fight the urge to squat though.

Anyway, here is today's workout:

BTN Push Press: 135 x a lot- 185x5-205x5-225x5-265x5-285x5

Close-grip bench: 135x10-225x10-295x5x5

Dumbell Skullcrushers: 55sx 12-12-12

Weighed 250, got a pretty good workout. The close-grips were easy, but it is a good place to start to make a run with them.

PWO meal was chocolate milk and an open-face turkey sandwich with gravy and fries and cole slaw.

Sarge, it wasn't lack of nutrition for sure, I think it was just a mild case of vagina-itis on my part.

RMexico, first of all, that is the best user name I have ever seen on a discussion board. I took two weeks of lifting off due to getting ready for law school finals and being pretty much run into the ground from training, the last thing I wanted to do was write a law school exam being loaded to the gills. I didn't back squat for two weeks before that because my knees were bothering me, it is a bit of an overuse/tendonitis thing. I did fronts with a pretty light load during that time.

As far as loading/unloading goes, I have done much, MUCH better in the past and have had journals that I think would give most people a pretty good idea of how I like to do things for the most part under ideal circumstances. Right now, my life can't totally revolve around workouts, so I do things as best as I can.

Ideally, I like 3 weeks of loading followed by two weeks of unloading, rinse and repeat. During the 3 week cycles I would train two presses (one overhead once a week and the other on a bench twice a week), front squats twice a week, back squats once a week, cleans twice a week, and then some assistance like rows/chins/skullcrushers. Then every several months, I would peak to unload and try to hit some new maxes. If that sounds like a mess on paper, basically, I'd worry about flat bench, BTN push press, power cleans, and front squats for 3 weeks then evaluate the lifts and see what needed to go and what needed to stay.

Lately though, I train 3 times a week and try to bench once, push press once, back squat once, front squat once, clean or deadlift once, and do some heavy rowing once. I start conservative and run the numbers up over 4-5 weeks and then back off for 2-3 weeks and repeat.

This week I am home for a few weeks, so I am able to go to the gym more often. If you've got any particular questions about loading and deloading though, feel free to ask and I'll try to answer as best as I can.

LJ, you still workout? j/k, man. It's good to see you back posting.

Need to post the last 2 workouts

Yesterday:

Power Clean: a lot of warm-ups, then 245x3-265x2-285x1-295x3-305x2-315x1

Back Squat: 135x a lot-225x a lot-315x5-335x5-365x5-385x5

Deadlift: 225x5-315x5-405x5-495x5-545x5

Today:

BTN Push Press: 135 x a lot- 205x5-235x5-265x5-285x5

Close-Grip Bench: a bunch of warm-ups and 135 and 225 and a triple at 275, then 305x5x5

Yesterday was a pretty good workout. Today wasn't bad now that it is said and done, but I felt like I got hit by a train the whole time (from deadlifts yesterday I am sure) and the PPs were hard at 285 and 265 was harder than it has any business being. Close-grip was alright, I ground through them.

Flying back to MI tomorrow, I'm probably not going to work out again until Mon.

Flat Bench: 135 x a lot- 225x5-275x5-315x 3 sets of 5

Hey BiggT, how do you think my progression is coming and do you have any suggestions thus far. I'm going to try to get some pics up so people can see where I'm at.

Also, i noticed that when i tried to switch to the BTN Push Press it about murdered my shoulders with the current weight I am using for the front version of it, is that normal? and should i decrease the weight and work my way back up? because I seem to like the BTN Push press because it puts less stress on my back.

Matt~

BiggT
05-05-2008, 04:48 PM
When you say it murdered your shoulders, do you mean the actual movement itself or lowering the bar?

Eventually, you'll probably be better from BTN than from the front. The key there is eventually, like everything there is a learning curve and an adjustment process. I thinkBTN push press is a great, worthwhile lift and definitely something to work with.

How do you do the lift? You need to lower the bar fast and bend at the knees to absorb the impact. Also, make sure the bar hits the meaty part of the traps and NOT the base of the neck.

matt1990
05-05-2008, 04:51 PM
It felt like a sharp pain when i used my current weight for the front style to do the behind the neck and I wont allow it to touch my neck anymore, I believe that was the mistake in itself bro. I'll switch it around because the fron variation has been irritating my lower back and I've been bending at the knee's to absorb impact as you stated.

Sharp pains are never a good thing, lol. Make sure to hit the traps and not the neck. Also, there is a bit of a learning curve, so take some weight off and adjust to the new lift and build it up over time. I posted in your log too.

Hey brohah quick question. If I was going to start Barbell Benching again (the Flat Bench Variation of it), could I do it twice a week? or Should I stick to once a week with the close grip variation of it? A lot of people said I'm a bit to young to be giving up that lift so I was curious as to what you thought on this matter. Also I was thinking of something like this for rep and set wise for benching:

Barbell Bench
4 sets x 5, 1x3, 1x8 or 5 sets of 5 at increasin weight.

That look good or?

If the bench bothers your shoulders, it is usually caused by benching too wide and with the elbows flared. If you bring in the grip a little and tuck the elbows, it shouldn't cause any discomfort so long as nothing is torn or anything like that.

Twice a week is fine, but it can't be two balls out sessions. Maybe one day of 5x5 adding weight each set to 1 heavy set and another day at 5x5 with a set weight. You can have a heavy day and a lighter volume day, or you can have 2 lighter volume days, but two heavy days won't work. Before, a lighter high volume workout on the bench, I'd do heavy push presses or jerks or something overhead first, then hit flat bench first on it's heavy day.

I like the flat bench and I think it is useful for strength because it overloads the muscles responsible for more functional presses like inclines and overheads. For development, it is a lot of stimulus. So, I like flat benching and have never had 1 single shoulder problem in almost 16 years of lifting.

An out of the gym injury or pre-existing injury aside, correct benching shouldn't bother your shoulders. Most ''gym rats'' have bad shoulders from benching because they grip entirely too wide, they flare their elbows, and they work with too much intensity (% of 1 RM) for too long of a period of time.

Check the grip and tuck your elbows. In my experience, most guys who bash the bench as a shoulder wrecker usually grip too f-ing wide and flare their elbows.

Also, don't pause. As an athlete or a bodybuilder, touch and go benching is what you need. Pausing isn't a sign of strength, a way to get more developed, or even correct form, it's a competition rule. I say leave pauses to powerlifters who can protect their shoulders with a shirt. Touch and go, but don't bounce or raise the hips/ass or any of that shit.

Power Snatch from the hang: I decided to start training these. I moved my grip in a little, so it isn't a true snatch grip, but they were fast and long and a little looser than a snatch typically is. I just worked up to triples with 155 and had am ass ton of room to spare, I'll build them from here. A friend of mine who threw the shot for a D 1 school told me about these a while back.

Back Squat: 135x10-225x8-315x8-365x5-365x5-365x5

Flat Bench: 135x10-225x8-275x3-300x3-325x3-345x3-355x3-300x10

Finished off with:
Pendlay rows
Some curls
Situps
everything light and worked through 2-3 sets quickly

BiggT, whenever you talked about playing basketball and having hamstring issues the next day and having felt a pop in your hamstrings under a set in a full front squat. How did that go? I'm assuming improvement was fast, did you get any therapy on it? What do you think led to that small problem? Hope all is well.

I hadn't trained in a little over two weeks, so I lost some weight room conditioning and I hadn't really played much basketball either. It was just a pickup game, but it got pretty competitive and I was sore the next day. That day I worked out in the gym for the first time in 2 weeks and squatted and was sore as hell the next day. 2 days later I thought I could clean, but during warm-ups I felt a little pop in the hamstrings and they began to cramp a little.

They got better over the course of 3-4 days and I was fine. It was probably about the lowest grade strain you could have. I just used a little ice and that was it.

Just wondering with your current stats how close you can get to dunking. I am 5'11 @ about 225 right now and can dunk a tennis ball. I can't palm a basketball and I tried to dunk a volleyball but came up a RCH short each time (red **** hair, sorry... it may be a texas term now that I read it). I think if I were sub 200 I could throw it down for sure.

It's always funny to see an Oly lifter or one that has trained the disipline for years and how high they can jump. I got REALLY into plyos a few months back and was able to get up on the 54" platform. Talk about some funny looks in the gym.

AL, I'm a shade under 6'. I can grab the rim with 2 hands from a complete stand-still. I can dunk a tennis ball for sure, I didn't try when I was home though. When I was home I clowned around a little with the official-sized ball and missed a shit load of dunks, I just couldn't quite throw the ball down through the rim without losing control of it. I could probably dunk a girl's ball or a youth ball, I just didn't have access to one. If I were sub-200lbs with the same exact power, I think I could do some pretty cool shit.

I am gonna start doing box jumps and broad jumps and some other stuff and see if I can get another couple inches on my vert.

I'm actually pretty horrible at basketball itself. I've always been a pretty decent athlete though and I can rebound and intimidate. The one guy was 6-8 and maybe 190lbs and he wasn't unstoppable (if he was he wouldn't be playing pick-up basketball in wilkes-barre, PA in mid-April, lol), but people were afraid of him. To me, 190 on a 6-8 frame is a little guy, so I'd go at it with him and get physical. If he got the right position, there was no way in hell I could out-rebound him, he had 8 inches on me, but if we both got hold of a ball, there was no way in hell he was getting it off me.

Flat Bench: 135x10-225x8-275x3-305x3-325x3-345x3-360x3-315x8

Meals for today so far. I had to lift at 7 AM due to some things going on today with my schedule, so I started early

6 AM: 2 packs of cinnamon oatmeal and a ton of crystal light to drink

Trained from 7-almost 9 and sipped Gatorade throughout (if you can't tell I am paranoid about being dehydrated and tearing something early in the morning, lol)

9:15: a lot of chocolate milk, 4 egg omlette with bacon, 2 slices of toast

Next meal is at noon and I am thinking a corned beef rueben with chips and a pickle, lol

I showed your pics to my "other brother" and he was like "HOOLYYY SHIIIIIITTTT... Lily, I promise never to mess with you again" lol.

A little back logging, on Fri I deadlifted up to a triple with 585 BUT it was with a crappy bar that was slightly bent and it didn't rotate, and I use a hook grip, so it was painful and it mangled me, lol.

I did train M-W-F- last week, I didn't post about W or F (other than the DL), I don't want to back log both days out of sheer laziness, so here is Monday (yesterday) of this week:

Hang Snatch: up to a bunch of triples at 205

Back Squat: 135x10-225x8-315x8-385x5-385x5-385x5

Flat Bench: 135x20- 225x8-275x8-315x5-335x5-345x3-355x3-365x3-325x8

Incline Bench: 225 x 3 sets of 8

The squats feel good, I don't see them stalling anytime soon. 365 is the most I've tripled on the bench since '06, so I was happy with that. The incline was because the gym was crowded and I didn't want to fuck around at the dumbell rack. I did them quickly and they weren't taxing at all.

Matt, I was pumped about my grades, I did well. I am gonna go and treat myself to PF Changs later. I say treat not because I follow any kind of diet (I don't, lol), but I try to watch my budget with school and all, so usually when I go "out to eat" it's Chipotle or Taco Bell or some sausage biscuits at McD's, lol, although I do think Chipotle is quality stuff.

BTN Push Press: 135 x 15- 185x6- 225x6- 265x6- 265x6- 265x6

Power Clean: 135 x a lot- 185x5- 200x3- 225x3- 255x3- 275x3- 295x2- 315x1- 335x1 (PR!!)- 335x1

Jump Shrug: 405x10-495x10-585x10

Some hammer curls and called it a day

It was HOT in the gym last night and I was sweating like a pig. The first clean at 335 wasn't the best one I've ever done, I almost lost the bar in front of me on the catch and I kind of had to brutalize it into position to save the lift. The second single at 335 was much more textbook.

I weighed 253.

Alright, so long as there's interest, lol

I've been training pretty diligently lately, I just got out of the habit of logging on here. The last couple weeks were solid, but nothing to really to write home about.

Today was a great workout though. Plus, I had to go at 8 AM, so I was even happier with the workout.

Front Squat: 135 x 10- 185x5-225x5-275x5-300x3-335x3-365x1-385x1-405x1 (tied PR)- 415x1 (PR).

Close-Grip Bench: 135 x a lot- 225x5-265x5-295x5-315x3-325x3-335x3

Pendlay Row: 135 x 10-225x8-275x8-305x8

I was pumped about the fronts. My plan was 405x1 to tie a PR, but it was pretty fast and not too hard. My typical inclination is that once I am happy with a lift I want to try something ridiculous because I've already accomplished my goal and feel like I have nothing to lose (I had a 25 in my hand to put on and try 455), but whenever I do that I end up getting pasted, so I played it sensibly and went to 415 and got it. It was a solid lift, but a grinder and definitely a limit lift, I couldn't have done 420, thats for sure.

I credit Old Country Buffet to the PR. I went there last night and pretty much put them out of business, lol.
