View Full Version : Hip Pain - What could it be?
I'm at a loss trying to figure out the cause of pain in my right hip while seated. I normally sleep on my back but if I happen roll on my right side my hip starts to ache and I wake up. I currently take naproxen ED for my shoulder issues (surgeries/arthritis) but the naproxen isn't seemingly doing much for my hip. I do have Snapping Hip Syndrome but don't believe this to be the cause of the dull constant pain/ache which occurs approx. 20 minutes after sitting. I thought possibly my arthritis has now gone to my hip but I have ZERO issues when I am mobile: no pain, stiffness, aches, reduced ROM. My hams/quads/glutes/lower back all feel great with the pain coming from the front of the hip and in the joint itself. The problem started about 2 or 3 months ago and continues to intensify. I haven't suffered any trauma or changed anything up in my workout routines/lifestyle.
Anyone have suggestions or thoughts? I will address with my doc on my next visit but am looking to troubleshoot the problem beforehand.

Sounds like sitting or laying down on it is inflaming it for some reason. Ice it until you can see your doc.

In the joint, not the tendons/muscle structure?
As a secondary question, how have products like glucosamine worked for your arthritis?

If it comes after 20 min. or so, the way you are sitting or lying down may be causing nerve impingement.
Try this - bend at the waist with your knees straight and turn around like you were looking behind you. Now say my name and wink.
Does that hurt?

As soon as I get up and mobile the pain totally subsides. Not sure if ice is necessary then?

Yup, its in the joint...tendons/muscles feel fine. As for glucosamine, it didn't do much for me. I'm 35 with arthritis...I have a feeling 50 is going to feel ugly.

Hadn't thought of this...you might be on to something Bev. I have impingement in my shoulders and the sensation is somewhat similar although no tingling or pins and needles.

I tried and it didn't hurt at all....maybe you were doing something wrong? haha.

It could possibly be a labral tear, if it hurts from sitting and you can only relieve it by changing positions...GO SEE A DOCTOR...you will need an flouroscopic x-ray and then an MRI to see how extensive the tear is...and then a DOCTOR who specializes in this type of ailment (very few do) will determine how severe and IF surgery is absolutely necessary. Once the capsule is broken (in order to get to the labrum for repair) it may actually increase your pain. Best of luck and GO SEE A DOCTOR!!!

Thanks KIDD. Nate PM'd me pretty much saying the same thing. I'm going to do some reading on labral tears in hips and see how similar what I feel matches to the symptoms listed. I wouldn't be surprised if this does turn out to be the issue since I had a severe SLAP in my right shoulder repaired last summer. If I had a crystal ball I think I'd foresee more good times ahead.....
Thanks for everyone's help and input! I'll keep you posted.

How many positions have you tried....sitting in that is?
ANy relief based upon how your sitting...legs parallel to floor versus knees high or low? Just thinkin out loud...
Would hate to think it is so bad as to need surg :flowers:

I've tried many positions. Sitting and otherwise :) In all seriousness, I have tried every which way to get comfortable and as long as there is a bend in my hip there is discomfort. I have even tried shifting my weight to my left glute but it doesn't help. I love to row at the gym but can only muster max. 20 mins before it feels like my hip is catching and/or locking up. Riding the bike is pretty much the same. I wouldn't be surprised if my hips start falling apart just as my shoulders have done. I will call for an appt on Monday with my surgeon.

Nothing! I thought it was possibly me, maybe I was doing something wrong. I rechecked my form in the mirror over and over again and over again some more....

I've been working around the 'side effects' of a stress fracture for about ten years now. It's amazing how one joint can affect the rest of your body's well being when it's not working properly.
I hope your doctor is able to give you a proper diagnosis. My best wishes to a speedy recovery.

Thanks D! I'm running out of healthy joints....knock on wood my knees stay strong. I'm hooped if those decide to bail on me too.
I have an appt. booked with my orthopaedic surgeon Oct 15. MRI's around here usually take 6-8 weeks for an appt. so I'll hopefully hav some answers by end of November/early December.
I'll update the surgeon's findings here once I have them.
Thanks again to every one who posted or pm'd me with suggestions and direction on what the issue might be. I greatly appreciate the help and wealth of knowledge offered on AF!
UPDATE:
Today was my appt with my ortho. I have NOTHING to update other than I am feeling extremely frustrated at this point. I had two issues to address with my doc and he was USELESS on both fronts. He was unable and unwilling to provide any insight into why my shoulder is having ongoing problems. In a condescending tone, he said, "I recall telling you last year that you will always have issues with your shoulders and what you are telling me sounds normal for your shoulders." I then proceed to pop my shoulder in and out right in front of him and said, "tell me what about that is normal????". His response was, "Please don't do that. I've told you it's not good for the joint." He then changed the subject and asked what my second concern was so I informed him about my hip. His response, "I don't do hips." I replied, "I know, you are a shoulder guy and I'm not asking you to do my hip. I'm asking you to listen and at least point me in the right direction". So he listened to me for about 30 seconds before cutting me off. He said, "It's probably soft tissue damage and pain for 5 or 6 months is really nothing to be concerned about. You haven't suffered any trauma therefore its not the joint itself." My response, "ya, well, I've never suffered any shoulder trauma either yet you have personally told me I have the worst shoulders you've ever seen. See what no trauma has caused my shoulders? My hips are deteriorating just like my shoulders because of the laxity." His response, "Well, just like I told you about your shoulders, continue to weight train to build muscle mass as this is pretty much all you have to hold your joints more snug." I put my hands up in the air and said, "that's it? Can you at least refer me to a guy that does hips so I can get a diagnosis?". His response, "Talk to your GP. They can point you in the right direction". I was soooooooo angry I was choking back tears on my way out. Thankfully health care in Canada is free or I'd be PISSED I had to pay a penny for that visit. I talked to a gal at the gym who just had a hip replacement and she gave the names of the great doctors she dealt with. I have an upcoming appt with my GP and I will get a referral from her to the hip doc.
Needless to say after this lesson in futility, I went to the gym and threw some heavy stuff around to make myself better :)

Sounds about right for a canadian specialist. Mine diagnosed me before I even explained where the pain is, then insisted on a cortisone shot six inches away from the trochanter (hip pain here too....), totally in the wrong area... before sending me for a bone scan that he himself admitted would be useless for diagnosing any soft tissue injury.
Good luck with the hip doc, hopefully it doesn't take too long (my new specialist booking has been 4+ months waiting) and it might even heal itself while you wait

I didn't know healthcare was free in Canada. That just sucks BM, I feel so bad for you. I hope that you find a specialist that can help you. I have a friend at the gym the underwent hip replacement a year ago and just did the other one last week. I haven't seen him but when I do I will ask him about stuff. I never see him squat but he does leg press.
Hope your issues resolve and that your pains get better :flowers:

How I missed this I will never know.... but that is pretty much how I roll. Gotta love test and determination all bunched up against a purty girl.

Yup WW, health care is free up here but it comes with pros and cons. Pros: it's free. Cons: wait times are ridiculous. I'm not sure if the doctor shortage is as dire in the US as it is in Canada but it's pathetic here. It takes me 3 months to see my GP! If you are referred to a specialist you could be waiting for a few months minimum to 1+ year for your initial appt.

wow that sucks... I never wait for an appt, well except the dam gyno. I changed and almost had to wait till November 3rd, but they had a cancellation so they squeezed me in yesterday. My healthcare coverage is great and my deductibles are not high or copays either. Plus it costs me literally nothing because I work in pharma and they cover most of it. We also have a big corporate group on site that is free of charge - so half the time I don't go to my GP, plus I just found out today that the Nurse practitioner there also does gyno/exams, etc!
I just spent a $40 buck copay that could have been free lol...
Good luck girl...

Good Lord! I can see my GP in 2 days if I have to, normally less than a week. But when my wife had a breast cancer scare, she had to wait 4 months for tests. It wasn't BC.

My GP is a female making her much more popular.....she hasn't accepted new patients for the last 10 years since she is so busy. She is also a rare breed that GENUINELY cares about you as a whole. She NEVER rushes you and always asks, "and how is your personal life? how is your social life? how is work?". Before you leave, she asks, "are you forgetting anything before you leave? Did I answer all your questions?"
I know Manitoba currently has a program out to retain home-grown docs....if I'm not mistaken, they are forgiving a portion of student loans if you practice for a set amount of time in province.

Well, she sounds better than my doc. He's a good guy, but he's a Polish immigrant. Nothing wrong with that, but all the other Polish immigrants in the region wanna see onlyv him, & he can't say no. Hence he's extremely busy.
If you're new to the region, there is a 3 year waiting list to get a GP. Everyone else has to go to a clinic.
not sure if this will help, but I have dealt with hip pain, and talked to a few others about it and what they did to fix things.
heavy lifting aggravates it, but mostly sitting down will cause it to be unbearable at times. An old Oly lifter told me to take a bag of ice and put it on lower back when you feel the pain. after 10 mins, the pain is gone, then it could be a herniated disk, you don't feel the pain in the lower back but instead radiates to hip. What he has been doing, and now I do it as well, is lots of back traction to seperate the disks(inversion table, reverse hyper, traction with bands), also the best rehab I have been doing for it is the foam roller.
Sit on a foam roller, take foot and cross it over your other knee, then roll the piriformis, this hurts like hell, but I rarely have pain while sitting now
This may or may not help, but maybe will alleviate some pain for a little while.
