Ok, I needed to share this with all of you! http://anabolicfitness.infopop.net/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

This is for anyone who has watched a stupid personal trainer hand out bad advice and just generally not train their clients very well...

Yesterday Curious George and I were finishing leg day up. Box Squats and other such things and were winding down with some standing ab work (it is not just for abs, but to work the lower torso as a whole for a better strength base).
This trainer comes over and says "You shouldnt do that. You should isolate your abs for better results."

Now this person is someone we have both watched with disgust many a time... she competed some time in the past and feels that that in combination with her being of eastern bloc descent makes her somehow "in the know". She is always quoting Pumping Iron and using things they did in the movie as the basis for her training ideas.

The few people in the gym who train with any seriousness know shes a fool, everyone else thinks she is the "She-Arnold"!

So anyway... I was ready to blow it off and ignore her (for a change) but CG wasnt. It took all of 10 seconds of him tearing into her to prime me to jump in too.

I took her idea of isolating a muscle for better growth and compared it to doing leg extensions as opposed to squatting because it isolates the quads better... we had her on the ropes quickly.

She tried to turn it back to abs. She tried the old "working the lower abs more than the upper abs" bullshit which CG pounced on like me pouncing on a pie left unattended on a window sill...

He reminded her (as if she knew) that an emg of abdominal work clearly displays that there is no way of isolating any particular abdominal "section".

To spare you the blow by blow of the argument, we pretty well pummeled her into submission and drove her to fall back on her past bodybuilding accomplishments. As if that somehow made her mistaken views more legitamate.
At this point people were starting to stop and smile delightedly... even some of the people we had previously thought were her "fans".

In the end she didnt really know what to say and changed the heart of the topic around as quickly as possible to make it seem like we were talking about something more "generic" and not debating what she said.

We took that as a victory and made our way out...

It was a good day.

If you think the personal trainers in the US are bad you should come down south and check out the trainers in the mexicain gyms. Most of them are dangerously ignorant. I have trained in several gym throughout Mexico and its pretty damn bad.

There is only one personal training association here and its not worth much (a weekend course). People get hired by their looks only - literally. Thank god most mexicains don't train with intensity because if they did, there would be over a hundered injuries every month in most decent sized gyms.

The gym I currently work out at (considered a "hardcore gym" because they turn on the AC only when it gets over 100 outside) has recently hired a new trainer. She is a very cute lady with a nice body but not much of anything else. She's got these new young skinny guys doing leg abductor and tricep pushdowns. ?? But she is pretty and very friendly so everyone likes her. Isn't that the most important anyways? http://anabolicfitness.infopop.net/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif So gym members ask for her advice because the guys want to get close to her and the girls want to look like her.

Viva Mexico!

I hate personal trainers that can regurgitate Pumping Iron, but can't tell you how to keep your back safe.

I have seen this trainer have folks do a rounded back bent over barbell row. You can't even contract your lats when your bent like this, much less put your back in a safe position.

She has beginners doing lunges on the smith machine.....The FRIGGEN SMITH MACHINE. The most dangerous piece of equipment in the gym. Has she never heard of ball squats?

I don't know everything, nor do I pretend to, but any advise I give, I make sure to give Safe advice. I am always willing to learn. When people act like they know everything, chances are they don't know shit.....so we called her on it.......and she didn't know shit! http://anabolicfitness.infopop.net/infopop/emoticons/icon_mad.gif

Killer, you have to tell Monster to stop having all his women "friends" call during training.....at least I think they're women friends? http://anabolicfitness.infopop.net/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif
