A few quick comments

Mcdonald vs Maia

I have new respect for Macdonald… Even though Maia took the fight Macdonald gave him a hell of a run. He took it to the ground and fought in Maia’s world, getting out of some pretty tight predicaments…. Good fight.

Florian vs Huerta
Good fight.. I expected more out of Huerta though…. Florian took it ..he was the better fighter.. Huerta needs more time

Lesnar vs Herring

Holy sh*t Lesnar is a power house…. Without a doubt Lesnar took it .. You can certainly see his inexperience… when he took Herring to the ground he would just hold him there…he was not grounding and pounding.. You could see he is a wrestler.. With some training this guy will be unstoppable…

Gamburyan vs Emerson

12 second fight.. Emerson knocked him out

GSP vs Fitch

Great fight… Fitch took a beating.. GSP in 5 round by decision…They both worked hard for this one… Fitched is a survivor… He deserved to be there but GSPs precise hits and his ability to neutralize his opponents makes him the champion… BJ Penn will have a fight on his hands

Fitch came about as close as one can get before getting knocked out. He clearly lost, but damn, that guy has a heart bigger than anybody. What a warrior that guy is. He earned GSP's respect, that is for sure. He needs to work on his stand-up game more. He is pretty good, but that is a weakness for him. It showed with his last 2 fights now. After that initial hit he took in the first round, he was wobbly the entire next 4-1/2 rounds. I just can't believe how many times he recovered enough to press things to the end. He did well when he keeped pressing on GSP. When he sat and back-peddled, GSP would crack him. He should have pressed forward more often imo. Not saying he would have won, but GSP wasn't as effective when pressure was put on him. I think he was respectful of getting hit by a haymaker though too...lol.

Lesnar is a beast from another world! I don't know how else to explain it. That guy is gonna be unstopable with more time. He didn't do much on the ground, but even his light hits look like they hurt. I was waiting for him to start the knees when he got side control, those were brutal. I bet Herring has multiple fractured/broken ribs after that fight, he just got the hell beat out of him. I think Lesnar was just playing it safe on the ground, not to get caught like he did with Mir. Herring had nothing for him in this fight, especially after he was hurt early. I give him props for not throwing in the towel. I don't think Brock will have to do much once he gets his opponents on the ground because he is so damn strong and can just keep them pinned there. On the fence, he lacks experience, but damn, he is so big and strong, I just don't know if anybody has the power to force him down:dunno: I was not expecting it to go so one-sided.

Huerta....I have a whole new respect for that guy. The story of his upbringing is one of the greatest i've ever heard, i'm glad I got to hear that. He will be a champion one day. I don't think Kenny dominated the fight, he just did enough to win and not get hit.

Okay, i'm gonna have to say....Florian is a DORK!!! He is a hell of a fighter, but he just seems like a strung-out weirdo...lol. I like him, but damn, he is weird. I wish this fight would have been a 5-rounder:nod:

Gamburyan got knocked the hell out...lol!!!

McDonald surprised me with his approach to the fight. I thought he was nuts going head-to-head on the ground witrh Maia. I have a whole new respect for him too. he should have keeped it on the feet that 3rd round because I think Maia was dusted in energy.

Maia, as good as a ground fighter he is.....still has a long way to go. Not taking away from McDonald, but he needs to improve on some things before he goes marching in with a higher caliber fighter. I think mcDonald is afraid to stand-up now since Rich Franklin destroyed him in their fight awhile ago. McDonald doesn't have that good of a stand-up game, so I think that's why he went to the ground...and apparently he got game on the ground. Much better than I thought he did.

The other fights sucked.

Glad Manny got KO'ed he is nearly as big a dick as Karo .
Also glad that Florian won the fight , he seems like a humble guy to me ..... looks like a mega nerd though agreed.
Man if Brock actually gets some BJJ training he will be an absolute animal .... too much size and strength for just about anyone to cope with in the ufc ..... but he speed and agility for that size impressed me most.

GSP should remain undefeated for some time to come , i just see his wrestling and size being the difference if he fights BJ ..should be a great fight though .

Speechless on Lessnar. He proved pure strength and mass can beat a tested experienced fighter with 40 fights.. I never thought I'd see that day.

No doubt he will eventually be the H- champ as he learns even more.

I was very impressed with McDonald.. He did very well on the ground against one of the best BJJ-MMA guys in the UFC. Great fight.
I felt bad for Huerta.. I was rooting for him all the way and felt he could have taken it. Florian just ran and countered a little here and there. He barely eeked it out. Not impressed with Florian and at all, not that I ever was.. Roger will be back.. War Huerta!!!!
Lessner is a complete ass and fucking sucks. He did jack squat but lay on Herring the entire time. He's the type that gives wrestlers a bad name.. I was not impressed one bit and he will continue to lose against anyone with decent BJJ.. because it will neutralize his size advantage.. thank god! I was even less impressed with his antics after the fight. He's a fucking idiot.
Now Fitch is one that give wrestlers a good name :) He earned even more respect after that fight. He did well and just lost to a more experienced fighter. No shame at all in taking GSP to a 5 round decision. Great fight!!

I'm afraid that Broc is going to be the new Tim Sylvia, where he'll just lay on someone to secure the win. I am very disappointed to see his post fight antics. I guess he needs to train traditional martial arts to learn humility and respect to your opponent. I look forward to when he fights Kongo sometime early in the New Year.

I thought Lesnar showed horrible sportsmanship.

He fought well and is going to be a rising star in UFC but i gagged after I saw him pointing and laughing and doing that whole lasso thing. This isn't the WWF. Stop being an ass. lol

He was so disrespectful.

The Pioneer Press here in MN had great quote:

"UFC fighting is a legitimate sport. It requires skill and fast thinking, while combining mixed martial arts, boxing, and first degree assault."

lesnar is a chump. herring isn't all that great. get him in there with someone who can fight, and see just how good he does.

Yeah, the post-fight celebration by lesnar was distasteful imo too.

Do you guys think he is too big to set in the hooks?

I seen him try, and as much as I wanted to say he was inexperienced at it, and that is probably the case, do you feel his size hindered him doing it to any degree???

Just wondering what you guys think.

no, don't think its his size. I've rolled with some pretty big dudes, and they have no problems getting their hooks in. has more to do with his style. he's a wrestler. i've never wrestled, but I don't think that putting your hooks in is a wrestling move, more of a jits thing, which i don't think he has any skill at.

But, is it any worse than Penn going across the ring and licking Sheirk's blood?

It has been argued that he did not use hooks cuz he was just trying to ride him around. If he tried for hooks and maybe a RNC, then it may have been reversed, somewhere Brock def does not want to be. What you guys think?

Actually, on the weekly MMA show Bas Rutten said with Brock's size, what he needs to do to win is take Herring down and just stay on top and throw elbows.

JayC
08-12-2008, 11:18 AM
No, actually it is a very very common collegiate wrestling technique to throw in the legs (hooks). Infact, "riding" the legs is a style and form that some wrestling schools base their program around. Its intermediate wrestling to learn the legs and how to defend, whether you use them or not. Most true heavy weights don't use the legs much.. my guess is that he was scared to fuck up, get to high, and then get caught like he did w/Mir.

Yeah, but BJ has always been crazy, and he's the best LW in the world. Brock hasn't earned anything yet. I bet he'll act all humble again once Kongo KTFO him.

Kongo sucks. He'll have nothing for Brock. Especially in the TD defense or ground work aspect.

And Brock will have nothing for Kongo when he's getting hit with leg kicks and knees from the clinch.

Kongo is proportionately good standing as Brock is wrestling so Lesnar had better hope he gets the takedown quick or Kongo will take his head off . personnaly i hope Kongo does violently knock him out ...... would be a much needed attitude adjustment for Brock . And as for the hooks ... Tom Erickson used to get em in fine and he was heavier then brock ...... Oh and for the person who said they cant wait to see what happens when Brock fights someone good .... we saw it already he did'nt last 5 mins ... Go Mir !!

I agree with you on Mir. If Brock couldn't put away Mir, I highly doubt he'll get past Werdum or Big Nog. Add Cain Velasquez and Shane Carwin to that list as well.

Just for the record, I am not big into showboating or "acting like an ass" by anyone.

Actually, lately, the UFC has been turning more into a WWF kind of thing for pre-hype fight and interviews. But I understand it is to create interest and controversy so people will watch the fights, I just am not a big fan of it.

Kongo couldn't even not get taken down by Herring over and over and over again who is NO where near the wrestler Brock is.

Kongo is gate keeper at best at HW.

I gotta agree w/Sylva.. I like Kongo and he's shown that when his opponent is willing to stand and trade w/him, he's deadly.. problem is he has nothing on the ground and his takedown defense is still suspect. ..so unfortunately he's one demensional at this point. If he were to perfect his wrestling and concentrate more on BJJ, he'd be a contender.

MMA math isn't very good on gauging how a fighter would fare. Just because Fighter A beat Fighter B, and Fighter C beat Fighter it doesn't mean Fighter B doesn't have a solution to beat Fighter C, styles make fights. You get me?

Yeah, and what I did wasn't MMA math.

It was looking at a fighters respetive skills/skill sets and what he lacks and drawing a conclusion from that. I simply cited his inability to defend a takedown from a much inferior wrestler as supporting evidence.
