View Full Version : A L's run to the APF House of Pain Texas Cup Nov 1st

I've decided it's time to either play, or quit playing. So I am gonna make a run at a PL meet.

APF House of Pain Texas Cup Nov 1st

My plan for the next 12 weeks is to work on a progressive overload system (thanks Ray). I'll do 5's for 3 weeks, 3's for 3 weeks, 2's for 3 weeks, and 1's for 3 weeks.

Goals for the meet:

Squat 550
Bench 350
Deadlift 625

I will compete at 198lbs. Today I'm 235lbs.

A few questions for the pros -

I am not going to use a bench shirt b/c I don't have one, and there is NO ONE local that can work with me. I live in AUstin, TX so if any of you know anyone local please let me know.

Can I teach myself to squat in briefs? If so, what type should I get?

Wrisp Wraps? Never used them.... Recomendations?

Knee Wraps? Also, never used them.

Shoes? Can I squat in my oly shoes? I much prefer them to chucks, etc.

I've got 12 weeks starting tomorrow. I am very excited. Any suggestions are welcome but keep in mind I have NO chains, NO bands, etc, etc.

I can't afford a squat suit, deadlift suit, etc. Period. Wish I could, but I simply can not.

GREAT!! I'll have a team there and can offer you assistance if need be so you're not lost.

First off, if you are not on this forum go now and register Bad Attitude Gym (http://www.badattitudegym.com)
It's Texas lifters and you can find other PLers in the Austin area.

Here is a link on how to wrap Knee Wrapping - Putfile.com (http://media.putfile.com/Knee-Wrapping) with our very own Pixie demonstrating the wrap.

Go to APT Pro Gear - Bodybuilding Weight Lifting Powerlifting Strongman (http://www.prowriststraps.com/store) and order the Strangulator wrist wraps and the ZRV-Pro knee wraps. Get the wrist wraps 36" long and the knee wraps 2.5 meters long. Please tell Alan that J.R. sent you.

You can squat in your oly shoes. You'll need a singlet. I would do this meet without gear if I were you. You don't really have enough time to worry about learning gear. If you MUST have briefs go with the Metal Pro double ply, a bit loose, and you'll be okay. Just remember to sit back and knees out.

Good luck, SS, RB

I'd do your first meet in belt/wraps so there is less to worry about.

235 -> 198 by Nov 1st? Just go in weighing whatever, bro. Its your first meet... there's no point to cut weight for your first meet. Go in and enjoy the experience.

APT makes the best bang for the buck wraps on the market.

I feel fat and slow right now - I feel great at or around 200. Last time Bunny helped me cut weight we dropped 20 lbs in like 5 weeks. I am just softer than I want to be.

I am not stressing about the weight cut, but my diet needs dedication. If I don't make the weight class I want I am still going balls to the wall at the meet.

Thanks bro. I appreciate the input for sure!

The thing to remember is that being cut doesn't mean a damn thing in Powerlifting. You may feel slow but you are stronger. You don't have enough time to drop weight and then build up strength. You should really NOT worry about your weight and just worry about getting stronger at this point.

You will NOT be going for any records nor be competitive at either weight so it doesn't matter. My 198'er will be opening at 800/500/550 just to give you an idea of what you'll see. SS, RB

Sweet!!! Pixie and I will be at the Cup as well, be good to get a chance to meet you in person. I agree with several of the above: 1.) I wouldn't cut too much, go heavy and go in feeling strong. 2.) If you must buy gear, I'd do as RB suggested, Metal Pro Briefs. They're very forgiving and you'll get years of use out of them. Hell, if you pull Sumo you can even pull in them. 3.) Don't get too caught up in numbers, it's good to have goals, but it's your first meet, just go lift and have a good time. It's a good meet, lots of lifters and lots of fun. The after-party is usually smokin as well!!!

Thanks everyone. I will probably start a training log next week when my new routine starts but tonight I did some flat bench.

Worked up to 295x3. Nice pause on each rep, weight went up really fast on the first 2 reps. 3 was a grinder but the bar was not touched.

I haven't done any flat bench in the past 9 weeks, just incline so I was kinda excited that it went up so smooth. I know that is a far cry from 350x1, but I am thinking that number may go up by meet time.

Getting used tot he pause at the bottom is the real chore and I did on each rep. I am thinking the command to "press" will seem like an eternity compared to gym lifts.

Any tips on bench technique are greatly appreciated. I know I should get a video, but I am a tech putz of sorts, so it probably won't happen.

Do wrisp wraps add anything to the bench? My wrists are never sore (thanks to all the Oly style lifting I have done for the past few years)

tuck your elbows a bit, not extreme, to help.

Wrist wraps won't add pounds to the bench but it will save the stress on your wrists.

APT has singlets also. When you order your wraps just order a singlet as well.

A L

On singlet sizing.... 2xxl? I am on the ATP site and I don;t want something so tight that my nuts stick out (considering my doses that isn;t a real issue!)

Then I can wear a shirt over or under for squatting? I can't imagine the bar gripping to my back as well as it does a chalked up tshirt.

Maybe Anafit will sponser me and sent me a free tshirt..... Ulter??????

Beverly McD.

T-shirt under the singlet is fine. Chalking your back is fine too.

I wear a 36" in jeans, and a XL is tshirt - both of which right now are a bit snug. What size singlet would you suggest?

2XL would be fine.

That should be fine A L. You could even wear a squat or deadlift suit if you happen to have a loose one.

I have never even seen one, much less wore one.

Any suggestions about learing curve to squatting on a monolift vs. the power ack I currently use.

My only thought is to have spotters move the part where you rack the weight when I take the bar up and then move them back when I am done?

I only have one spotter as is, but it's not like I am squatting insane weights. I will be happy with a 550+ raw squat in the meet.

You can walk the weight out at the meet, just like you do now. If you don't train with a monolift, I wouldn't suggest starting at a meet. You want to lift just like you train.

RagingBull666
08-01-2008, 03:46 PM
or you can do like I did at my first meet with a mono!! I learned to use it during warmups!!

Go World Powerlifting Congress (http://www.worldpowerliftingcongress.com) and click on the rules. Read them and learn them.

Rules Questions:

1. Deadlift - I do it barefoot or in socks, what are my options here? DL Slippers? If so where do I get them?

2. DL Socks? All the oly guys I have trained with use these knee high addidas soccer socks, but I don't use them (but see the big boys on youtube covered in what I guess is baby powder on their legs). This is to keep the bar moving right? If so it can'tbe chalk, right?

3. Liniments/Rubs... I use nicoflex on a max days. It is like Icey Hot's grandfather on dbol. It sounds like that is OK as long as I do it in the warm-up room. ???

4. Openers: I do not want to bomb out in the squat or bench, so I am guessing I aim at something I know I can kill for my 1st attempts?

1. You have to have some form of footwear on deadlifts. You mentioned you have chucks. They work great and have nearly no sole on them.

2. Deadlift socks are okay. They wear them so they don't get ripped up by the bar. The white powder you see on their legs is baby powder. You would NOT want to use chalk and that would increase the resistance on the bar.

3. Yes

4. Since you are lifting raw make your opener something you can triple, paused in the gym.

Go in and enjoy the experience.

best advice right there. Set your own goals for the meet. Push yourself training, then push yourself a little harder in the meet. You will have a lot more fun challenging yourself, and when you come out on top, you feel like you won a Gold medal. :drinkbuds:

I wouldn't mess with learning the mono unless you get the chance before the meet. Just use it like you would the rack and walk it out, like Beverly said.

However, this isn't necessary, but if you're going to walk the weight out, I'd suggest letting the head judge know in case they give you a quick squat command. Unrack the weight, walk back and get set... that's when you should get the squat command. Unfortunately, I've seen some lifters wait for a squat command before actually stepping back to get set up. Results in a red light, but they looked ready to squat.

As someone who has spotted/loaded a lot of meets I'd ask you not to walk out your squats. Walked out squats are more dangerous for the spotters and it can catch them off guard since they are not expecting anyone to walk a squat out.

Learning to squat in a monolift is not that hard and takes about 10min to learn how to do in the warm-p room, especially since you are planning on lifting raw.

Hence why I suggested that if he wants to walk them out to let them know.
