I know the guy didn't retire with the greatest of ease, but I really miss watching him play.
I met him and talked with him for while. He was the same person you see in tv. He was honest and very personable and remembered my name when he left (I don't remember names of my cousins, much less some stupid bodybuilder fan-boy.) He was really cool.
Was he the most exciting football player ever?

He was exciting to watch, so he was definitely one of them, but I prefer the bruising/punishing style running back ala Earl Campbell.
Defensively, LT was a exciting to watch, and Ray Lewis is amazing.

Ray Lewis is the most intense and driven football player I have ever seen.
I love the footage of Earl exploding into that guys chest.

He might be for now. I think that will be Michael Vick's title in a few years though.....think about it.....if Barry Sanders could throw a 70-yard bullet pass what would you have? Answer: Vick. Maybe that's overstating it a little, but to be the most exciting I think you'd need the ability to pass on top of a great ground game. Sanders is easily the most exciting running back though, the only guys that could come close would be Priest holmes, Marshall Faulk, and Foreman that played for the Vikings back in the 70's (if you ever get a chance to watch some film on that guy defenitely do so...he was talented).

He probably is though I wasn't a huge fan, as great as he was he's not the kind of back you build championship teams around. I'd say these are the most exciting players I've watched in my life
Running Backs
Barry Sanders - no reason to elobarate here he just simply was the most exciting runner of our time and probably ever
Marshal Faulk - not only was he exciting to watch but he was probably the greatest running back to ever grace the field from 98-01, if the not the greatest football player ever.
Terrell Davis - I'm biased here as a Bronco fan but this man could have went down with the all time greats, the very next season after rushing for 2000 yards he blows out his knee, the injury that ruined the rest of his career. He was the best cut-back runner I've ever seen and had the most productive first 4 years by a running back in NFL history, I owe this man a huge thanks as a bronco fan
Recievers
Randy Moss - about the only guy I can think of as exciting when I think of the wideout position, there have been a lot of great wideouts in the last little while but how many of them could make you jump out of your seat
Quarterbacks
Elway - greatest arm ever, toughest ever, threw on the run better than anyone, most feared single player at the QB position, best clutch QB ever
Farve - the only guy that can rival Elway in every attribute mentioned above, play declined a little early is his career for my liking
Steve Young - I'd take this guy over Montana any day, I'm not going to get into my Montana bashing here but trust me the 49ers win just as many super bowls if not more if Young was the QB in the 80's. This guy was tough as nails, scrambled with the best of them and always made the clutch throw
Doug Flutie - I had the joy of watching him do all those things he did in Buffalo for about 8 years in Canada
Randall Cunnigham - never a big fan but he was fun to watch
Mike Vick - could be number 1 on this list in 10 years
sorry no defensive players for me, you must have the ball to excite me

Here's my list with a few already mentioned above:
Bo Jackson: A threat to break it every time. The second best combination of power and speed after Jim Brown.
Deion Sanders: One word, Prime Time.
Ray Lewis: I mention him almost every time I mention the Ravens. How can you watch an animal like that and not get hyped? He makes play after play.
Randy Moss: Nuff said.
Michael Vick: See above.
Walter Payton: I can't believe I'm the first to put his name down.
Randall Cunningham: Still have his jersey, Vick should give him a chunk of his cheques. Has anyone ever thrown a better deep ball?
Here's one with potential.
Clinton Portis: Sick speed and moves to go with it.
One I forgot and just put in.
Lawrence Taylor: Try and tell me that you could sit there and watch him and not be excited.

Great thread!!!!
RB's:
1.) Payton: I like how he just ran people over. What also made him great to watch was his blocking. Might be the best blocking RB of all-time.
2.) Barry Sanders: Can't really say more...probably should be #1....
3.) I liked Terrell Davis as well, he was a damn stud. Probably one of the biggest tragedies to an all-time great player, next to Bo Jackson. He might have been the best ever by far if he never had that injury. Pretty much unstoppable...he was a Peyton=-like runner as well with his bulldozing of defenders. Pretty much the all-around perfect back.
WR's: Moss.
LB's: This is where all the action is...my favorite part of the game!!!
Right now: Ray Lewis is the man; I also like Lavar Arrington (partly biased of course).
Back in the day:LT, Reggie White/Bruce Smith, Singletary, etc...
I also liked whats-his-name from SF the db guy....can't remember his name??? DAMMIT! uh...he had his finger cut off so he could play...you know...tell me.
I can't give praise to the older days, as i'm only in my twenties. Earl campbell, jim brown and others I can't comment on except for the NFL films scenes on espn that I see taped.

CG already knows my answer but...
1. Walter Payton.
Best running back. Best blocking back. Best receiving back. Played QB in several games. 2nd string punter
Never looked for a sideline.
Broke Jim Brown's record without ever having a single lineman make all-pro playing in front of him (as great as he is... I'd like to see Emmitt try that).
2. Barry
3. Earl
4. Bo

Well, I am not going to get into the debate on the best - but I will tell you that it is not a good idea to act like your couch in the basemment is the pile of O and D lineman at the goaline and go over the top, ala Walter Payton. You will land on your head on the other side - and yes, it was cement under the carpet. Explains a lot about my posts, doesn't it?

Nice pic Ulter! Yes, that pretty much is it. I thought I was so cool http://anabolicfitness.infopop.net/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
Kinda off topic to this thread, but did anyone see that FSU RB destroy that DB (cannot remember what team) in the early part of the season during a run? And this past week (I was flipping back and forth from LSU game and Oklahoma so I cannot remember which one) but there was a blocked field goal (I think Oklahoma was blocked) and the defensive guy that picked up the ball stiff armed the kicker and made him his bitch! haha
These plays reminded me of Walter.

It still irritates me to no end that the Lions picked Kalimba Edwards instead of a 20 year old stud of a running back whihc they greatly needed.
Well Shit!

In my time barry was definately the most exciting in my eyes offensively. Defensively have to give it to the greatest defensive player ever Lawrence Taylor...
