What are the rules in your state for amateur MMA. Jersey has no knees or elbows, you have to wear shin pads and no punching on the ground..this just passed wtf. Now Jersey fighters are seeking comp elsewear, Del, Mass, and Maryland. I dont get it.

Jeez i wish we had a decent amateur competition for mma at all no matter what the rules . Even most of our big Pro mma organisations have gone out of buisness.

Going off our rules in my state for Muay Thai etc though ... if we had amateur mma it would definately include elbows and most certainly punching a downed opponent etc .

Wow, that really sucks. You might as well just throw on a pair of boxing gloves and be a boxer if they are going to enforce all of those ridiculous rules. Thats not even MMA anymore.

I'm currently a state sanctioned Ref/Judge in KS and Mo.

The rules are as follows, but are having some minor changes being made to them.

Currently the amateur MMA rules are.

No Elbows at all.
Knees are ok at all times except to the head of a downed opponet.
No strikes to the back of the head(we use the mowhawk line all the way down the spine)
Standard 4oz gloves are fine.
Kicks to body/legs of downed opponet are ok, no kicks to head of downed opponet.

Currently all submissions are legal.

Changes that are going to be made.

No knees/kicks to body of downed opponet. Kicking the legs of a downed opponet would be ok.
No Heel Hooks

Everything else will stay the same IIRC. Pretty standard stuff.

Again, this is all for the amateur level guys.

I don't believe that. They are trying to make a clear difference in the Pro/Am ranks.

I'm ok with that, do I think they're going a little far with these rules and regs, yes. But do I understand what they are doing.

Here in KS/MO pretty much the only real difference is Elbows, and soon to be heel hooks/knees/kicks to a down opponet. Which I think is on the right track.

IMO, it's not a bad thing for AM fighters to use 6oz gloves.

Geezz, that is a bit overboard but since its amateur, maybe thats why. Some of the problems I've seen with amateur events in this area is that they really dont give a fuck who fights... meaning, I've seen guys who have never trained in any of the major arts and never done conditioning step into the cage and get hurt... its an issue with some of the shows around here. Once you reach pro, your screened a bit better.. ya know??
as for here, pretty much what Sylva stated.. plus our team fights in like 5 different states on a regular basis and sometimes its the promotions rules you have to follow as well. Some states make the promoters register with the local athletic comission and some do not.

Why no heel hooks?

heel hooks are dangerous. very high chance of breaking someone's foot. even after a surgery, some people have hard time recovery, and it could be a possible career ender

Why no heel hooks?

What illuminati said... the issue is amateur vs pro. In AM fights where most guys aren't really conditioned and the other half have sloppy finishes and subs, someone could be permanantly injured with a heel hook. Most pro's have highly conditioned ligaments/muscles that are more resiliant, plus they know how hard to crank something for the tap before injuring, etc.. More skill, less chance of perm injury..IMO

The amatuers will be in for a rude one when they turn pro. But I do understand the safety aspect of it, for those who just want to get there chops wet with mma.

Ditto to what Illuminati and JayC said about heel hooks.
