Any suggestions are appreciated. I currently do calf presses twice a week along with my leg work out. I was just wanting to see if there were any other ways to accomplish this goal.

:anyone:

I have sexy calves.

I did what I call triples. My own name and it means absolutely jack crap.

I do standing calf raises on a box for 3 sets of 20 or to fatigue. You can also do them on a standing or seated calf machine and a leg press.

1st set- feet straight
2nd set- heels touching, toes pointed out
3rd set- toes touching, heels out

That is all I've ever done with calves. I am also genetically gifted with perfect calves but this workout really brought them out more.

Did much of the same for my calves too, but I also fall in the gifted category as far as calves go.

Carrying around 300+ all day is also great for the calves, very rarely do you see a fat dude with little calves.

Calves are like forearms, abs and your neck. They do so much work every day that they need a high amount of volume to really grow. I think Arnold used to do calf stuff everytime he was in the gym because they were so small when he was starting out.

I've actually read that somewhere I think. He use to crazy amounts of weight too. I guess I need to do them at least 3-4 times a week instead.

I trained them Post Incline sprints every work (comp related), that helped.

That was 6-7 days a week for my prep (short term)

I have plenty of muscle and meat to spare there.

I'm pretty lucky when it comes to calves as well. Always have had big ones, my friends say I don't have calves, I have steers.

While I do work them with raises, what has worked the best for me is downhill running. My calves have started to become far more cut when doing them.

GOOD ONE. i totally agree here. I cannot wait to start running the hills & stairs with this weather. I bounce down them and get really weird looks :) My calves are shot for 2 days PWO.

I remember a similar article, where he broke down what he did, how many times how long ect.

IIRC, he said it took him about 3000 hours of work to get his calves to a good point.

Turn those toes out and hit them hard and heavy. It takes a TON of reps to tire out your calves so hit them heavy and high rep................ then go heavier and heavier. You have to absolutely kill them to get them to grow. I used to burn them out high and then go heavy for just a few reps.

Of course as GT pointed out carrying this much weight does help. However, I had calves before I was like this but was a sprinter, shot put and running back in high school. SS, RB

Power cleans or jump shrugs. Sprinting up hill on your toes. Anything that is dynamic and works them hard really. I have never got results with just normal calf raises, but dynamic work has really started to bring them up. I have ridden bikes for 20 years too, so you think I would have a set by now.

I TOTALLY forgot to throw in sled work!! When you pull in reverse with sled and stay on your toes your calves will just jump out of your skin and run for cover!! AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH THE BURN!!!!

So just lighten up my weight for leg press and do them with my toes from there? Or should a do them on machine leg press?

I don't have great calves, so have to work at it. I have found some growth in doing 5's. So a 5 second contraction and 5 second stretch = 1 rep. Go until I cannot go any more then do standard reps till complete failure.

Just take the weight down and do calf presses on the leg press. You will hate me but love them!! SS, RB
