View Full Version : Sled dragging and calf muscles...

I recently noticed that when doing medium to heavy sled drags my calf muscles get fairly fatigued during the drag and feel well worked after. Is there something wrong with my pulling technique or is this just a wonderfull side effect of sled drags? I was under the impression that the quads were the main target.

Heavier weight usually means smaller strides. Which will put some extra emphasis on the calf muscle for most people.

With reverse sled drag drive off the heel not the toe. Shifts the work load to the legs dominately the quads. You will be more efficient with moving weight if you make bigger muscles take the "brunt" of the work load.

I have such a difficult time doing this. I want to plant the toe and then the foot and it burns up my freaking calves but only on reverse!!
Meat, which way are you going when they burn?? SS, RB

sled work was always the only thing that ever made my calves grow.
i find it to be the single best movement for calf growth out there. forward leaning belt pulling specifically but backwards belt pulling hits the calves great as well but at a dif angle. i feel the anteriors hardcore backwards dragging.

I'm walking backwards when they "burn"
I'm kinda surprised since I do not do and have not done any calf training in the last 2 years, which I feel bad about... but not anymore.

take a premade sled from a place like elitefts, or an old tire and cut slits in it so you can drop plates into it and tie it around a lifting belt, put belt on and walk around dragging the weight.
do it forwards , backwards , whatever.
thats all there is too it, its pretty simple n straight forward.
drag weight.

I'm one of those lucky people who have naturally jacked calves, hence I don't really know what will make em grow. But seeing sled dragging is hard work this might just do it.
Or maybe you just wanna see more pics/vids of me:kiss:
