View Full Version : Who likes pull-overs for back day?

I've seen in multiple books and magazines that pull-overs are primarily used as a chest movement. Hell, Arnold used it to work chest and expand his rib cage. However, I've heard some say that they use it to train back. I can see the argument. The movement is very similar to straight-arm lat pull downs, so why not. Pull-overs are even more similar to straight-arm lat pull downs if one uses a straight bar as opposed to a dumbell. Any thoughts?

The action of the lats is to pull things in towards your body. Straight arm lat-pulldowns seem to be an oxymoron. An inefficient movement at best.

I've found WG pullovers works the lats while CG pullovers work my chest more
i used to do them with a dumbell on back day but since i fawked my shoulders up i switched to using a rope instead. i get on my knees and with a slight bend of the arms i bring the rope to my midsection so that my elbows are tucked at my sides. i feel this works much better then straight arm lat pull downs....i use it more as a finishing move if anything and use pull ups and rows as my main back movements. don't think your going to get alot out of it to be honest but it feels good at the end of a workout sometimes.

Dumbell, usually just use the 60 for 3 sets of 12.
I've seen them more for chest development. I do them once in a while. They tend to feel awkward at times. I definetly think they might have a place w/sports conditioning/strength so maybe I should do them more often :)

My favorite is using a small bar 18" with the weights in the middle held by clamps. Reverse grip on a flat bench, hold it straight out over your face then put it back over your head to the ground and back up. I had to make the bar myself though, sorry. It's a compound movement lats to tris.

DB Pullovers with Chest. Straight arm bar pulldowns with back.

OK - so does anyone do "cable" pullovers. Using a rope or other attachment, mimicking the pullover motion, but standing, and straight arming the movement until you feel a nice overall resistance.
And no this is not the same as cheating at tricep pushdowns!
How about Nautilus pullovers?
Depending on the angle and the approach it would be hard to say this doesn't work the lats. I think it hits things from a different angle and does give the whole upper body something to think about. (Yep I'm confusing the muscles. Don't accuse me of buying into Weider principles but...)

i used to do pullovers but i found that other movements do the job much better. besides the slightest "body english" or "form difference" makes it a totally different movement.
