I had a road race (running 5k) on Sat and though I did come in sixth, I lost big time to a yuppie banker aged 3 years older than myself. He probably is a nice guy, but none the less, I am bothered by my lack of performance when I needed it most. This race was in my own subdivision - talk about losing with home field advantage.

I had a few problems during the race and one was with asthma. I have in the past been diagnosed with exercise-induced and cold-weather asthma. Though I do not have attacks as I did when younger, I can get a really-big sore lump in my throat while running along with shortness of breath. In the colder months I take two puffs of albuterol and I am good to go.

I did take 2 puffs of albuterol before the race and though the temp was in the low 60s, I had as hard of a time breathing as I have had in years. I only maxed out my heart rate at 91% max whereas while training I can peg it to 94% +.

After the race I got what seems like a chest cold. I had a hard time breathing for a few hours after the race and even today I am coughing up phlem still.

Aside from the advice of not to lose the race again, does anyone have recommendations for lessening lung inflamation?

Thank you

Breathing treatments. Your doctor can give you a breathing machine (insurance pays, but I think it's only @50 dollars even if they didn't) that is very small and portable. Very easy to use. It's not for the short term fix, like an inhaler, but used as a preventative so you don't have the lung inflammation in the first place.
