View Full Version : protein and calorie contents of frozen chicken

I purchase Tyson frozen chicken breasts from SAMS for my source of chicken. They are not breaded or fried. I am confused as to the protein content of the chicken breasts. On the bag, it states that 1 piece (which takes up a full cup in volume measurement) is 150 calories, 25 grams of protein, but on calorieking (and other bags I've had in the past), it says a cup measurement (4.9 oz weight) is 231 calories with 43 grams of protein.
Obviously, if i eat this 3-4 times per day, 80 calorie difference will make or break my diet.
Why the discrepancy? It seems to be the same amount of chicken w/ different breakdowns. The chicken is not processed/re-molded/etc.
1lb of raw chicken breast is approx 100g protein.

That chicken is kind of convenient but at the same time it cooks down to SO little.... I used it for a while and found it was easier to buy the Sams brand chicken breasts by the case ($1.68/lb here) cook 2-3 lbs at a time and freeze the rest. It works out to SO much more chicken and once you toss it in the freezer it is just as easy to use. At $2.50ish per lb, Plus how much it shrinks after you cook it, the prefrozen stuff just isnt worth it to me.

HOLY SHIT! that is CHEAPER than the prefrozen chicken. I'm getting that next time. Do you also get your beef from SAMS? I want to make an eye round roast, but I don't want to get bad meat.

Do you have to register to use it? I can't find a search function. Maybe I'm just having an extremely frustrating day and its right under my nose, but I can't see it.

Upper right part of the page. I dunno if there's info for frozen food, but there's raw food there.

Personally I dont buy red meat there... I totally trust it to be honest, its just that you have to buy SO much and I dont eat it often enough, even freezing it, it would be in my freezer for at least a month at a time (which im sure is fine but i like FRESH BEEEFF!!)
In addition, top round, bottom round, eye round etc etc (the lean cuts) are typically cheaper when on sale at say Publix (grocery store) ... the only place i will NOT buy ANY meat from is Wal-mart... I dunno if its the same meat as sams but it doesnt look like it and the people at walmart always look dirty and unsanitary.
Oh and about the chicken- it is pretty darn lean too... I was buying it at albertsons for 1.99/lb but I had to cut off a Lot of fat... the stuff at sams I dont have to trim up hardly at all, I'd say an average of maybe 1oz off every 2 lbs meat... and it doesnt shrivel up to nothing when you cook it :)

Chicken = SAMS
Beef = my friendly neighborhood grocery ;). (I concur on Walmart ;) ) .

a friend of mine works for Sysco foods. He told me that the beef they sell at Wal-mart is herford. Herford cows are for milking. My neighbor used to buy his meat from Super Wal-Mart and hated it. He moved from Ill. and thought Florida just had bad meat. He now gets his meat from a local grocery store and loves it.
Point being, don't buy beef from Wal-Mart. The bright red color of it alone scares me off.
The chicken however at Sam's, I need to look into that. I too agree that the bags are over priced. I used to buy them as well. Here you get 4 lbs for 13.99. they do cook down quite a bit. That's 3.49 per pound. Now i just watch the grocery flyers and buy from the grocery store that has the boneless or bone in split chicken breasts, usually 1.99 on sale.

Are you meaning the type that is not frozen, like in a styrofoam tray? If not, where at sams do you find it?
I shop at sams all the time because of my large family and I usually end up getting the bagged chicken. I'm always up for cheaper - oh and the frozen ones shrink up because they are soaked in saline to artificially inflate the weight.
