I have been trying to cut weight so I can compete as a LW strogman this summer. I am currently down to the range of 235.5-238lbs (depending on the time of day) from 265lb in December and 285lb at the end of last summer.

My first comp as a LW is on May 3rd which has a night before weigh in. Then there is the Beast on June 14th which has a day-of-the-comp weigh-in. Every this is going great except my strength has been steadily decreasing over the last 2-3 weeks, especially over-head pressing.

How should I approach this? Should I continue to cut? or Should I up the calories to try to recover some of the lost strength? Suggestins?

You don't mention what your target or intended competition weight will be.

Wow, those competitions are coming up fast. How time flies.

Ooops, well the weight class limit is 231. I guess my target weight will be 231 by or befre June 14th. The other comps are night-befre weigh ins.

Not really, I'm feeeling quite confident in everyting except over-head pressing, but that has always been my weakest link.

In the year before this one I went from 220lbs to 285lbs in 14 months, but my strength gains were dis-proportionate to the weight gains. The old saying "the quickest way to get strong is to get big" didn't pan out all that well. I was a much more successfull light weight then I was a heavy weight.

Now I realize strength is a function of time and diet, training, rest, supplementation are all constents/multipliers within this function.

Meat, I'm pretty sure I saw along the way that they will have night before weigh ins for the beast. email mattk

If thats true, I would be maintaining that weight or slight increase to get your strength back, and cut the last 5or10 in h20

Well it says right on the entry form:
Weigh-ins 8-10am
Rules 10:15
Contest starts 10:30

I suppose they want true 231's not HW's who have cut weight.

Continue to cut. Up your protein and healthy fats, cut your carbs. Are you assisted or non-assisted?

From the anvil

"Did I read that right on the ASC site. Weigh-ins are that AM for the show?"
"We plan on allowing weigh-ins the day before. Details will be revealed as we get closer to the show."

i am not into strong man or powerlifting contests... but lemme share my view..

The problem with the cutting is we loose weight too fast and cut calories a little bit over what is required..

So when that happens i keep my carbs intake low and increase my protein intake a bit higher, to reach the calorie requirements... If i feel that my lifts are going down i organise a high carb mean some 2 hours before my workout.. All the carbs will come from starchy carbs, no sugar..... So starchy carbs will take care of giving me sustained energy... and will help me to perform a little better on dieting..

So having a high carb meal on your over head press training days might help you..

But dont increase your carbs unnecessarily on the other days....

I do believe matt will be holding early weigh ins.

If your 235.5-238lbs now, there is no need to cut until a day or 2 before your show. Hot bath's, suna, water, carb and sodium depletion etc will get the weight off no problem. If I were you, I would eat to maintain my weight and wait untill a few days before weigh ins to drop.

I'm 100% assisted, I need a testosterone wheel chair to accomplish most daily tasks!:boobs:

Thats the plan due to the recent relevations on the Beast's weigh in.

Plus I get to practice the water cut twice before the Beast.
