I've been suffering from a chronic shoulder injury for about 6 months and been out of action for a long time. I visited many specialists and they say I have bursitis/tendinitis due to stress and type 3 (hooked) acromion bone. I have tried all the conventional methods: rest, ice, anti-inflam. drugs and even cortisone shots. It tends to heal a little but never completely and comes back again after stopping traetment.

Now it has become so bad that it hurts even during daily use of my shoulder/arm. Most of doctors say I need a surgery (acromioplasty) in which they will shave that hooked part of the acromion, clean the area, take out the inflammed bursa. According to them the odds that I'll be back to active sports are around %80....not so bad if you believe them.

Did any of you (or someone you know) have such a shoulder surgery? What were the results??? Do you think I could weightlift again?

I have known many people who have had the procedure done, usually in conjuction with a rotator cuff repair and/or joint capsule shrinkage.

All came back 100% to their sport or gym activites. Once the procedure is performed, just make sure to strengthen the rotator cuff, especially the supraspinatus, which stabilizes the arm (humeral head) upon activity, and the rhomboids. I have known of some older patients (in a PT clinic) who had the procedure and really didn't do much rehab outside of their normal sessions, and all they got out of it (with weak rotators) was more room to clunk around in. But, as a member of this board and weightlifter, I am sure you would take your rehab seriously.

Good Luck

i played ice hockey in college and have had all of that done, plus a little more. it took 3 surgeries total to fix it all, and more rehab than i will explain on this reply. but i can be done. with a lot of dedication, hard work, and most importantly patience. it wont be fast easy or fun, but i am stronger now than i have ever been. it will teach you a lot about yourself. if you have any other questions or anything let you can respond or email me and i will help you anyway i can, basically you will have to be patient and you will be able to return to the gym you will just have to be careful and go slow. you can do it.

Here is a good article on shoulder pain. Check out Lunchbox's thread in here. He went through a great ordeal with that messed up shoulder of his.
