I see these are staples of Flex Wheeler and Chris Cormier in their back routines. Needless to say, their backs are AWESOME!! Has anyone else tried them? If so, what type of results have they made in your back development???

I'm sure it has the same principle of smith machine squats:
1) safer due to controlled motion
2) isolates the muscle instead of using the rest of the body for control of the free weights.
I personally would incorporate it in my training but i wouldn't replace it with free weight deadlifts unless i had a good reason for it.
Dave Palumbo like smith machine squats as well so i figure at their size lifting 500-600 lbs is better off with a smith machine then risking injury with free weights of the same poundage.

say whaaaaaat?
Go with freeweights. Thats half the reason they are so good. IF you use a machine, your not exersizing all the many stablizers and auxilary muscles that are used in the squat and deadlift.
The only thing I have found good for the smithmachine is
A) Doing shruggs, its keeps the bar from rubbin against my pecker.
B) Hanging my towel on /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
No seriously, I dont use it. I dont like being forced into an unnatural powercurve. Many people do like it though.
Done correctly they can be just as effective
as regular deadlifts.. but it takes some practice.

I don't think smith machine exercises are as bad as some people say. I know I would not be able to do behind the head military presses without konking myself in the head if I didn't use a smith. I use it for good mornings too most the time.

I dont really like smith machinesn for leg work. If u do, go head and use them, nothing wrong with it. I have used them for bent over rows and I really feel it.

I use the Smith Machine for Squats and LOVE it. I can place my feet slightly in front of my body and concentrate on frying my quads, rather than balancing the weight, while going to absolute failure.

I believe that is more of a hack squat than a true squat.

If it doesn't hurt and you want to use it, then I say go ahead. The problem is that the body rarely moves in a straight line, so many movements will feel unnatural. Also, if you racked up injuries, the straight line may cause you some grief. As has been pointed out, realize that is doesn't work the stabilizers.
Overall, I am with Billy. I hate them. Except when the fitness bunnies use them!

Billy, I'm going to have to disagree with you on that one, my friend. Smith Machine Squats are no where near Hacks. I can squat 495 for sets of 12-15 reps on a good day. Nothing major, I know there are a bunch of guys on board that can do that with their eyes closed. But there's absolutely NO WAY I can do that with Hacks! My knees ache immediately because of my height(6'4").

Ya I cant do that much either. When you said your place your feet in front of you, I visualized a hack squat. My mistake /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
i don't know...i once tried to do deads on an isokinetic machine that has the same plane of movement as a smith mach, and i hurt my back immediately...the restricted plane of movement could be a problem for some.

Unless you are training to be a powerlifter, the best way to deadlift is with a trapbar (if your gym has one). It lets you move big weight while keeping your back straight and shins intact. I'm convinced this one the best mass-building excercises right up there with squats.

I don't get much back work out of deadlifts. Lower back and that's it.
I use them for hams and accept a little bit of lower back work as a side-effect...
Smith machine could work. I never use it for deadlifts though.
I do 3/4 deadlifts with a Hammer Strength machine (intended for lunges I think) and add a chest out, shoulder-blades squeeze kind of shrug at the end (think of the finish for a low pulley row, but with a different angle). This blasts my christmas tree area...

GETTIN' HARD!!
"i don't get much back work out of deads"
you're kidding? my back gets pumped from deads.
if you stand up with 450lbs, how is your back going to escape being worked?
