View Full Version : Sprinting on a treadmill - how do you guys do it?

It's getting really cold outside over here and I've been trying to do my sprints inside, on a treadmill. However, this is VERY hard and seems dangerous (or maybe I'm a pussy). Aiming for 60sec all out sprints and then 60-90sec fast walk. Any tips? Is it really possible to use a treadmill for this kind of training? Interval cardio doesn't really feel the same on a stationary bike or stairmaster.

Sorry, meant to post in the training forum.

Do a search on this, there's a recent thread on sprints... Fukkenshredded (among others) swear by it... it was a good thread and was fairly recent... all I recall was their recommendation to "bring your bucket"...;)

Whenever I did them (very rarely lol) when I was ready to slow back down, I jumped up and used my arms to hold me up on the rails that run down each side and then carefully put my feet down to the sides of the belt and then slow it down.

Is that what you are asking? It is a bitch to try to run and hit the up or down arrow button.

Yup, that's the thing. I was afraid I'd fall down or something, trying to push the buttons. I'll try grabbing the handles and jumping off then!

You know, I cant help but laugh when someone falls and it shoots them off the end like some midevil launching device.

Your right, it is dangerous I would never do sprints on one of those machines, even if you dont hurt yourself you wont be happy when you go flying off the end with everyone watching you.

no wonder I'm hurt all the time. I'm an idiot.

I start off at 4mph. when I'm warmed up I use the arrows and punch itup to 10mph. When the tread finally hits 10mph I start timing and hold it for one minute. then I scramble for the arrows to reduce the speed back to 4mph. I spend more time accellerating/decellerating than sprinting I think.LOL.

Hold a match to my ass cause I'm BLOWIN UP!!

Just a little tip... If you do launch off the t-mill, do not forget that it was/is going at a high rate of speed! I have seen many people fling off, try to crawl or step back on, only to be flung off again! Also saw a person get pinned between the wall and the revolving belt before.

You aren't going to get to be a better sprinter by sprinting on a treadmill...
(if thats your goal or part of it)

If you are going for strictly fat loss, you might try "sprinting" on an elliptical machine...its probably more practical than a treadmill.

I regularly do interval training on a treadmill that allows different programs. One program allows equally spaced intervals at two different speeds. So I'd to 90 secs quick followed by 90 secs slow - all without touching any buttons!

You only go round once....so you may as well go round with big arms!!

If anybodys up for some real fun try sprints in the stairmill. The chances for injury increase exponentialy, its fun. I did them for a couple of weeks at my old gym, but my new 24hr has the stairmill right in the front window. Theres no way I'm risking falling off in front of the whole city..
