View Full Version : Looking for advice about strange shoulder pain

I had a very strange experience with my shoulder and I'm concerned that I'm on the verge of an injury. Here's the scenario: Two mornings ago I was sitting in the bathtub (with my arms relaxed on the edges of the tub) when I decide to shave my arm pits (more info than you need - sorry). Anyway, I tried to lift my left arm above my head and got an incredibly nasty shooting pain from my left shoulder down to my elbow. I found that I could not lift my arm higher than chest height. I'm not sure if my arm was locked or if the pain was just that intense - but I could not raise it more than a few inches. The pain would pretty much vanish when I lowered my arm back down to the edge of the bathrub - WTF? I discovered I could sraighten the arm and raise it slowly above my head in front of me (with bearable pain) but I absolutely could NOT raise it past chest level if I did it to the side with my elbow bent. After about an hour, the pain went away and it has not returned.

The last time I did a hammer strength shoulder press I felt VERY strong and raised my final set to a new weight level. At rep 5 I got a sharp pain at the top and didn't attempt a 6th rep. that's never happened before - could it be related? I have no pain right now but I'm really worried. Any suggestions?

By the way, I'm on my third week of deca at 200 mg per week (3 doses at 200 mg and then I'll switch to 100 mg). Thanks very much.

It sounds like a pinched nerve to me.....give it time it will subside. Chiropractic treatment could be of help.
The extra weight on the shoulder press might have thrown your spine slightly out of alignment.

JMHO

PS: O.K it is Mrs. B not Mr. B, I was a little concerned about that arm pit shaving there /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Yeah, I use the electric razor on my pits... doesn't work too good in the tub /infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Mr. N, Thanks very much. I feel much better now and I've already called my chiropractor. I usually get a "maintenance check" with the bone cruncher once a month but I've haven't been since May.

PS - Your comment about shaving was hilarious. Actually, I don't allow Mister B to play with anything sharp like razors especially while he's on a contest diet - tee hee!

Yup, Mr Nobody is correct. Sounds like a nerve (shooting pain down arm). Possibly, by having your arm relaxed (out to the side in the bathtub) all your stabilizers relaxed and you got some impingement on a nerve. I know if I forget and put my arm up on the back of the couch while sitting there I sometimes get some pain.

Is there any weakness in any shoulder movements since the incident? Sounds like you will be ok.

Thanks Killer. I'm doing much better now. My chiropractor couldn't find anything wrong with my shoulder. He figured the joint may have temporarily popped out of place. When he tried to adjust my hips, I got a muscle spasm immediately. He strongly suggested I dramatically increase my calcium/magesium (with vitamin d) intake and spread it out over the day. My joints were getting very stiff in general and have much improved since I started doubling up on cal/mag and taking it morning, noon and night. It never occured to me that I could/should take more than the daily amount recommended on the pill bottle. Live and learn!
