My GF has been asking me for a while to train with me and I finally gave in. We have been going to the gym together for years but we have never worked out together. I have always been reluctant to let her join me because I have always like my “own” time in the gym.
Well…………… it has been four weeks and she is doing very well and I can honestly say that I don’t mind her working hard with me. All of the workouts have been going good but she has had some problems with legs. We do quads and hams together and every time we do them she gets nauseous. I suggested her sitting down between sets, walking around, breathing deeply, drinking more water and nothing seams to work. The only good thing is she doesn’t complain about it. She works so hard and then she starts to feel sick but she is always ready for the next set. I am sure some of the members here have the same problem… Do you do anything to stop or limit it from hapening? It only happens when she does quads and hams. Thanks for the hlep 5252

It gives you some small release of fast acting carbs (the Jolly Rancher that is). Squats and deadlifts are notorious for burning gylcogen, due to the large amount of muscles invloved in the movement. I usually have my wife sip a carb drink on leg day to keep her upright!
Also, its the same effect as a fat person getting off the couch and getting a head rush. All those muscle being worked is puling a large amount of blood into the area and may draw some from the head, resulting in a head rush, nauseas, and other sorts of craziness. After a while it seems to get less severe, or go away all together, probobly due to the training effect making the body more efficient (theres more to it than that, but I wont go into it unless someone really cares. Its one of those things that only probobly interest me). Id suggest a carb drink. You really want to try and control this, since it can be discouraging to many people and cause them to not give all their effort, or mabye shy them away from the gym. Hope that helps... Temple: I reread what you said 4 times and couldnt figure it out. I swear I kept seeing it as you saying you find "SITTING" on a jolly rancher helps! (Freudian slip or too much testosterone? Mabye both.) ----------------------- "Ambition is a poor excuse for not having enough sense to be lazy" "You cant help my isolation, you cant help the hate that it brings. Temple- Thanks for the suggestion, I will have her try it.
Monster- Thanks for the advice on the carb drink. What you said about gylcogen makes allot of sense. We are going to be doing quads and hams on Wednesday so I will tell you guys if it worked or not. Either way I appreciate the time you took to respond! If anyone else has some suggestions feel free. 5252

Squats are the only thing that makes me sooo sick at my stomach. I have gotten sick too many times to count during or after my sets. I too have discovered eating several peanut m&ms helps a bunch IF I eat them right before and during my sets. If I eat them too soon it doesn't work and if I eat them after I'm already green it doesn't help! If nothing else the old standby of going into the womens bathroom and laying on the cold nasty, dirty floor, which I would never in a million years touch while feeling "normal", head against a cold locker, cold rag on my neck, looking like a total weiney, until I feel better or a staff member comes in laughing at me knowing why I am down there! I find that doing light lat pulldowns helps because all teh blood is rushing to my legs (large muscle group) and away from my brain (less large muscle group LOL) carbs help as well but I really think getting the blood moving back up helps alot

WHAT DOES YOUR PREWORKOUT MEAL LOOK LIKE?
If it consists of whole protein meats and poultry, etc...then cut them out, or wait longer to go to the gym after eating them. Try something that is easier for the body to breakdown. generally a low-moderate GI meal has worked best for me with some essentail fatty acids in there for good measure also. This will help keep blood sugar levels more stable. For some reason I am not sure if drinking a carb drink would actually aid in glycogen resynthesis fast enough to make a difference. Does anyone know this? By all means though, if the Jolly Rancher trick is working, then don't stop. You could also try having some fructose before this workout, as it will glycogenate the liver more, and less of the "overflow" will be stored into fat cells. Also, tampering around with certain buffering agents before your workout could also help prevent the blood from becomming too acidic, thus you will get the nauseous feeling. These may or may not make a difference, but I sometimes use them. MR. BMJ |

Pre work out meal and all your meals throughout the day will influence this!
Personally, I cant eat within 3 hours of legs or it interferes with the workout (only leg day). I'll use the carb drink to keep me going, but anyfood Ive had within 3 hours is working its way through and out when my ass hits the ground on those heavy sets... ----------------------- "Ambition is a poor excuse for not having enough sense to be lazy" "You cant help my isolation, you cant help the hate that it brings. I never expected to get so many responses! Thanks everyone.
Mr. BMJ- Her pre workout meal is small. We train at 5:30 - 6:45 on quad and ham day and eat supper after the workout. At 3:45 she has a protein drink (22g) with a banana and a low fat cereal bar. What would you suggest? Also, I hope this is not a dumb question but can you give me some examples of buffering agents just so I know?? 5252

So I presented all of the options listed above and surprise, surprise she wanted to try the M&M one. Although a valid suggestion tnheygirl, I have a hard enough time keeping her away from chocolate! After some discussion she agreed that the Jolly Rancher idea was the one she was going to try. Well, it went great!! For the first time since we started she didn’t have to go to the bathroom to talk to the porcelain gods. I joked that she must not be working that hard today! (I was the only one who thought that was funny)
Thanks everyone for your suggestions and if your stomach has issues with squats and dead lifts then try one of these out. 5252

ROTFLMAO!!
TNHEY-- Laying on the cold diorty nasty floor...Oh I have been there too and then I start thinking about the floor and I'm not sure which is making me worse!! Peanut M&M's now there's a thought... I just find I can't eat at all when I'm lifting.... body temp water and lightly lifting an opposite bodypart is all i can do but hmmm I might be able to justify peanut m&m's sort of like forced reps... forced snacks!!!
