hello all, I just got the MRI results on my back. well it says that i have a posterior protrusion slightly eccentric to the left midline L4-5 and minor disc bulge L5-S1 and a hemanagioma in the L1 vertabre (thats kinda like those port wine birth marks people have but inside of the body)apparently my doctor doesn't think any of this is important. she said and i quote "If you want to pursue this any further you can go to a physcial therapist. If you have that kind of time"she doesn't seem to think any other treatment is necessary. She told me to try and rest my back and wait and see how it feels in a bit. yeah right apparently she doesn't have kids!! i felt like crying when i got off the phone. all i wanted her to say was this is whats wrong and this is how we can fix it and this is how long it will take for you to feel better. but instead she made me feel like a big cry baby for even going to see her. I am not a big fan of the dr's it takes alot for me to go to the dr's. I went because it hurts and it's not going away. I am at a loss, i don't know what to do next. I can't sit for long periods of time i can't pick the kids up with out it hurting and god lifting weights is a joke. this is so depressing, no real answers and no real treatment.

Hey Blue!
IO know exaclty how you feel !! I have a protruding disk in my neck at C6 and it took 6 weeks and three doctors to believe me when I said it wasn't a muscle spasm and I told everyone of them that I did it playing rugby at that!! (you know one of those mild non-contact sports where you might get a mild charlie horse in your neck) The third doc was the first one to actually xray me and sent me to a neuro who did nothing but suggest I take up quilting and keep taking drugs.. so I went to another neuro and he put me in PT and the PT was the smartest of the bunch...It is getting better now but it is a long road and you really do want to spend it in PT... It is so frustrating because you're in pain and they just don't seem to give two hoots...Tempts me to want to grab 'em and give them a similar injury and see how their treatment approaches change....See if they can prescirbe you a traction device to take the pressure off the disk...hit the pool and float but definitely go to PT and get a neuro to look at you!!! Don't let the quacks get you down! |

Oh, do I know where your coming from. This is the very reason I got in using anabolics in the first place. Hurt my back doing LIGHT warm up squats and for two years I was in pain. Well, long story short, I finally got some relief with direct cortisone injections right into the spine (twice). I then took it upon myself to do some test/deac to speed up rehab and to build the back muscles up.

yup a little creative pharmacology!!! i think thats where i'll be headed. I Know that building up the muscle around the disc is really the only way to keep it in place but with the pain i'm in it seems to be the ole' catch 22. I need to build it up but it hurts too much to do that! I'm madder than an ole' wet hen that this has hapened and to top it off this little twit dr made me feel bad about complaining. this was just not a good day for me!! I'm supposed to start back at work friday, god i hope theres a nice bouncer working with me, i do not feel like lifting cases of beer!! as a matter of fact i think i'm bringing my own guy with me to lift stuff!!
kaizen, rugby is a damn rough sport!! I'm glad that was all you did to your neck. any sport where they tape their ears to their head so they don't get ripped off during the game is dangerous! lol |

LOL Blue!!
Yep I'm a scrummie so I'm an ear taping girl meself!! 2nd row actually the injury is putting me out to inside center though.... I love being in the lineouts so being a back would be sad... My neck is definitely healing since the PT and I have a home traction device that I use that helps quite a bit... Drink tons of water and take glucosamine to keep viscosity in the disk... I hang upside down with my inversion boots to do abs and that helps take the pressure of my neck...It might be hard to do with your back.. |

stretch hamstrings- frequently
tight hamstrings create an incredible amount of tension on the muscles in the lower back you might want to look into getting a swiss ball and paul cheks back/abdominal rehab video. a friend of mine had a diskectomy recently and doing the workouts on the video have greatly increased stability and support while reducing tension on the lower back. peace MP

VERY good one Mac, I also got a few vids from Paul and did one of his "ab" seminars... abs, and how you do them effect the lower back to a HIGH degree.
With the cort injections, it reduces the swelling and takes the pain with it. But you will need time and be very carful coming back on line. LAte Lobo

What if you looked for a doc that does sports medicine? It would seem that they would be far more understanding of your problem. You need to at least look until you find someone who will help you. I have talked on here about my friend who has major hormone problems and she went to her ob/gyn and was told that he really didn't think her manic/depressive behavior was hormonal even though she has stage 3 endometriosis and brown patches all over her face - gave her the latest antidepressant and sent her on her way.

i'm looking into a Pyhscial therapist right now. My aunt works for one that is good. I will see them and if they actually acknowledge that there is a problem i will be happy. but i also want to get the hemagnomia check out too. I know it is nothing really life threatening but the fact that it is actually on my spine bothers me. this is all just a big pain in the ass!!! I probably wouldn't care so much but it is really interefering will EVERY aspect of my life.
I will definately check out that video Mac thanks! |

Please please look into Rolfing! It CHANGED my life. I had lots of residual pain in my back and neck from a car accident 15 years ago. In the mornings I'd be so stiff, I could barely get out of bed. Some days I could barely turn my head. My back was always very tight and having spasms.
Physical therapy, massage therapy, chiropractor, and accupuncture all felt good but gave only TEMPORARY relief. Now after 10 rolfing sessions I have NO PAIN and no stiffness (except for occasional DOMS from training). I did it a year ago and still NO PAIN! Rolfing is a type of massage therapy that works on the fascia (the connective tissue between the muscle). The main principle of rolfing is stuctural alignment. It is not painful, though sometimes there's a "hurts good" feeling when a tight spot is released. During the sessions, you might not even feel like it's doing anything, but over time you'll notice BIG changes. |

It's not very mainstream even though it's been around for years. Make sure your therapist is Rolf certified, not just a regular licensed massage therapist who says "sure, I use some rolfing techniques"
Check out http://www.rolf.org/about/index.html and http://www.rolfguild.org/aboutgsi.htm These sites have lists of rolf practitioners in different areas. Also, look in your local yellow pages under rolfing, if nothing is there, check under massage therapists. A rolfer's listing will usually say something like "certified Ida P. Rolf practitioner". |
