Off Topic...Sorry.. but need some help on a fire wall.

I just had cable installed and I need to also install a fire wall. Can anyone give me software advice. I need to do this quickly as I don't want to get hacked!!!

Tell her to go with a hardware firewall not software, they're harder to crack. I would go with the Linksys that my father just got and she has the added bonus of being able to hook up additional computers at a later point.

The single port is MFG Part Number BEFSR11 and lists on www.insight.com for $97.99 or the 4 port that would allow up to 4 computers is MFG Part Number BEFSR41 and lists for $144.99.

Also tell her, that if she buys the 4 port one, there is a $20 Manufacturer
Rebate between 5/11/01 and 5/31/01.
The one we have at home is a D-Link Manufacturer part number DI-701 and
lists for $91.99, the 4 port version is Manufacturer part number DI-704 and
lists for $103.99 with a $20 rebate between 5/1/01 and 5/31/01 on the
DI-704.

She could purchase either of the single port units and then add a hub at a
later point if she wants, which is what we have.

ok now this is all from my hubby. what it means is beyond me,but this is what he sent me!!I hope it helps and if you need anymore info i will ask him!

Try this product, hardware firewalls are nice but not needed for home use, a good software firewall is all one needs.

I've had both. In fact I think I still have a copy of BlackIce Defender, but zone alarm is much easier to use and way more effective IMO. BlackIce keeps out hackers, well as good as you can keep them out, but Zone alarm runs your computer in a stealth mode where the hackers can't see that there is a computer at your address. I would like to add that one of the best ways to keep hackers out is to always stay up to date with your security updates from Microsoft. Every time a hole is found they patch it, go to Start, windows update, and then download and install the lastest security updates.

Speaking of hackers, my computer keeps shutting down on me after it has been on for over an hour. It started happening after I got the cable modem. Do you think someone is playing games with my computer? I took it in to get checked and they didnt' say anything was wrong with it.

ulter..........do you have the older version of zonealarm pro or the new 2.6 version? i too have blackice 2.5 but prefer zonealarm. just downloaded the 'free' version of 2.6 and its great!!!
