Default QUESTION ABOUT MY MOM...???

OK, my Mom used to be your typical 40-50 year old woman...no cardio, no weights, no consideration for diet...

Over the last years, she's progressively (with my swift kicks in the ass!), become MUCH, MUCH healthier, starting by just walking--building up to jogging--and now lifting weights, too.

HOWEVER, lately she's been sick, all the damn time!! She can't seem to kick these little illnesses (strep, etc.)...

What would be the first thing you'd suggest to her to keep this crap from coming back...

I don't think she's eating enough, but she still thinks eating every 2-3 hours will make her fat...I'm workin' on it, but could use your assistance!

Thanks in advance from me and her!

At her age food and sleep are what she needs most to fight off virus and infection. Don't push too hard esp if she has never done any training at all.

A couple of questions for you. Has your Mom been taking any vitamins since she been working out?? Such as a Multi-Vitamin or Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Iron, etc.? If she isn't she should be taking a Multi Vitamin for Women if nothing else. There are also women mutli vitamin for menopausal and post-menopausal women. Protein drinks wouldn't hurt either.

I know this is going to sound like a stupid question, but What is her doctor's opinion of her illnesses?

If your mom is not eating enough and is exercising she could be fatigued which would weaken her natural immune system making her more susceptible to getting ill.

Just a thought

Badkins,
You asked for my advice in regard to this post, but I can't answer until I have the answers to the questions that Trinity asked...

Default SORRY, SHOULD HAVE INCLUDED MORE...

OK...she's been taking a multi-vitamin from Vitamin World, and extra C and E like her bodybuilder son has recommended...the doctor is being a normal doctor, he'll precribe antibiotics, they'll work for a little while, the shit will come back, he'll prescribe some more, etc. My opinion of medical professionals has gone considerably down since 1)I started bodybuilding, and 2)started reading these boards... I haven't been able to convice her to take a protein supplement yet...

Hope that helps, thanks for all your help so far...I honestly think that Ulter's diagnosis, although simple, might be it...

Though I am no medical professional, I can relate to what is happening to your mom. When I first began trying to get back into shape after my last child I was obsessed with getting lean....so I trained, trained, trained...rested and ate very little. As a result I was constantly fatigued and ALWAYS getting sick (as you can imagine). One infection after another, you name it, I had it, ear, upper respitory, tonsilitis, and so on. That is, until I got a competent trainer (national level fitness competitor) and she knocked some sense into me.

I ate differently......a whole lot more, supplemented w/multi vitamins and mins (to this day I take between 5 - 10,000 IU of C depending on how strict my diet is...I know this seems like a lot, but if I don't I can feel the diff in my body....and C is not fat soluble so the body does not store it), and if I do NOT SLEEP enough (as was the case this past fall....I GET SICK. This fall/winter even though I was only training 4 days p/week with ZERO CARDIO I was averaging only 4/5 hours sleep p/night so I managed to get a sinus infection and walking pnuemonia TWICE!)

If I were you, I would explain to your mom that more is not better when it comes to putting such tremendous physical demands on her body and that she is in all likelihood greatly comprimising her immune system by NOT SLEEPING and EATING ENOUGH!!! It is really very simple....but sometime the easiest thing to overlook.

And as for the medical profession.....DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED!!!!

Print this out for your mom and hopefully she will listen to her son AND HER BODY....which are both obviously telling her to SLOW DOWN and EAT!!

I wish you and your mom well, My Brotha!

Default I SINCERELY THANK YOU!

Thanks to everyone so far...she usually sleeps enough (we always laugh 'cause she goes to bed at ike 8-9 p.m.), but I know the food (especially protein) is a likely culprit...

I'll let y'all in on an update in a month or so...

Good posts. And you know most everything she needs to do, it's just getting her to DO it. One thing I'd like to chime in on is the use of B12. Now I realize she will most likely not be into getting an injection from her son. However, she will be ok if it comes from her doc. I've started using it of late and can 100% tell you I've felt better, not gotten my usual cold this winter, and my appetite is bigger.

In fact, of the five local folks I "assist" all but one got the B12 incorporated in the cycle. He was the only one who has gotten flew AND then a cold. And when you toss me into the mix, that's five out of six who did not get sick. I like them odds. We see each other at least three times a week so we were all exposed to whatever. Their ages are 53, 46, 42, 37, 35 (me) and 27. A nice wide spread. And the guy who got sick was 37. Now this ain’t no double blind, placebo, scientific experiment, but hell, you make your own conclusions. And the 53 year old is a smoker (yes we are working on him!)
