Flipping the 1000 pnd. tire last nite and i failed to get out of the way of a failed flip. The tire came down on my left thigh and i don't how it really happened but i felt a pop in my ankle. I'm pretty sure i sprained my ankle that i sprained about a year and a half ago. Going to get it checked out tomorrow. My contest is in three months and things are looking a little bleak right now.

ASG, 3 months is a long time, just believe that it will heal, take it easy for a bit and you'll be fine.

Is that the 1000 in your avi? that thing doesnt look like fun.

Ya that's the sick beast of a tire that Mr. Meat picked out. It has no grip and can get in my head and mess me up.

Verdict on the ankle?

ASGARDIAN
02-12-2008, 08:31 PM
i have strained my anterior talofibular ligament, that will now never be the same. However, i will be able to get it back to about 85-100% of where it was originally. In the mean time i will work core and upper body. Also i will buy a support for my ankle.

Dude you ain't gonna be out for long, I promise you that! You'll be back with us training events within 2-3 weeks. For now try visulizing your ankle getting better, or better yet make yourself believe that it will be at 110% in a couple of weeks. Ahh, the power of the mind, trust me it works! It also works the other way, negative thoughts will only limit you and put you in a destructive cycle.

If you didn't wrap up your ankle and didn't go for a run with the farmers after the accident, then I'd be worried and your season would indeed look bleak. Or if we would have packed in training for the day and I would have drove you to the emergency clinic then I'd be worried too and indeed that the future would seem bleak. Or if you didn't go to work the next day maybe then.....

Dude this is a paper cut. Use this time to work on other stuff. Usually when stuff like this happens it happens for a reason. Turn this negative into a positive. Come out stronger.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

From a first hand eye witness acount. The tire was the last part of a 3 piece medley. 440lb yoke for 75ft, 280 sled for 75ft, and the big tire till failure. He got the tire up to his waist, then tried to hitch it up and over as usual but may have lost grip. It come down on his leg. the edge of the tire hit the lower quad around the knee and drove it down towards the ground. I beleve this forced the lower leg to go beyond the minimum angle between the lower leg and the foot.

I'm really surpriesd you didn't tear your achiles tendon completlely off.

meat is right about the power of mind. You did farmers after the incident? It can't be that bad then.
I can tell that tire is no fun. looks like no grip at all, I've used a bit of a tacky cloth when at contests on the nasty ones, might try that.

I want to do the light stuff of everything you guys are doing. It's hard to not do the same weights as you guys, but i'll just have to force myself. I'll just have to go slow and take it easy with everything. No speed this time, just methodical steps towards the finish line.

Long days though as i wake up at 4:30 am, work 10 hours and train from 4-7. By the time i get home it turns out to be a 15-16 hour day. I need lots of mental strength to get through the day. Viking squats eh? is that the reverse hack squat that svend does? Do you have his Dvd? I love that dvd, and watch it often, entertaining, and you get to see the crazy viking train.

ASGARDIAN
03-05-2008, 12:02 PM
Yup! That's the Viking squats. Face in on a Hack squat macine. There is one at a place here in Vancouver that has two very long tracks. Built ideally for a Tall person. With this machine I have created my own Viking Squat Power Push. If there is a Hack Squat machine near by that has long enough brackets that the appuratus won't come out, try this. From the bottom just explode out of the gate and when you hit that right spot, you drive with your shoulders. At the end of the move you should be standing, arms fully locked out in between the platform and the appuratus that rests on your shoulders. I'm short so it works for me with that machine. A great over-all body execise.

Nice improvements on the front squat. 4-6 weeks ago you were doing like 275x1. Is your flexability improving too (front squat specific)?

ASGARDIAN
03-15-2008, 06:39 AM
Thanks. The fronts are working great for me right now, and i plan to use them in my routine every time i exercise legs. Flexibility is for me as far as i can comfortably squat with the bar, so I hope i'm going as low as what i should be?? I would also say that my flexiblity is better than day one doing fronts. It's also about being famiular with that exercise, which at first i was not. I also really like doing Box Squats and i am thinking i will alternate with box and regular squats each week.
More or less like this:
Box Squats or Squatz
Fronts
SLDL
Viking Squats
Standing Calves
Seated Calves
As well i found out that when i go really low on a box squat it really targets my core. Last week i did this and it affected my core like never before. As you can tell i love Squatz!!

*Can anyone please give advise on how i get into the 500's
Deadlifts
Avoiding pulling so frequently is how I did it. I can pull weekly but it doesn't do me any good trying to really add to the lift.

Once I get to a weight I can pull it more often, but getting there you need to have a fresh posterior chain.

Also, pulling 605 on a below knee rack pull helped prep my mind for seeing all that weight on the bar... it is a bit intimidating, but once you grip it and rip it... you'll have all the confidence in the world and just get the job done.

Today was one of those days where you absolutely nail a lift you've been working on for a hell of a long time. I had friends over from out of town for a quick hello. We were outside saying our good-byes, when i thought that i would give my heaviest river stone a try. This is the stone that i have been unsuccessful at pressing for almost a whole year. So i get down to pick it up and i thought to myself that i have to lift this one. Everyone is watching. Sure as shit the stone goes up easy as my lighter stone does. I was very elated and was on a high for at least 3-5 minutes. Damn PR's are just f*cking great!

ASGARDIAN

I started training when i was around 15-16 yrs old. I trained faithfuly until i was around 21 or so. I then got out of the gym and outside. I started hiking every weekend, cycling 200-300km a week, rock climbing, and staying in good physical condition through my work. I've done a few weeks here and there in the gym, but just started training seriously last February of 07'. So, last year i weighed 185lbs. I started training Strongman and going back to the gym. I never or very rarely trained more than 3 days a week. Something like a Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday. Just heavy weights and low reps. I now weigh 229lbs (last night) and i'm not enhanced in any way. I may take a protien shake here there, but not all the time. I just eat like a king. Anyway, you keep training hard and stay strong. I will follow your training log too.

I don't know if its the new platform or what but your atlas stones are becoming one of your strong events. Next sunday you're gonna go for sets of 5, then once you hit that maybe you can spend some time focusing on shouldering the stones. You'll need to get a little extra height... then you'll be a stone monster!

Looking good bro, but how come you did variations of deadlift?? Is there some reasoning behind it or?

matt~

I may be wrong but here it goes....The Roman Deadlift, you are off the floor on a block and the pull becomes further. This exercise i believe helps the lower part of the pull of a regular deadlift. So i stand on one of those step class plattforms. So far it's held the weight without breaking!! This brings the bar down to my ankle level. I do a few sets and when i go for the 405, i remove the platform. 405 simply flyes off the floor because now the bar is mid-shin level. That's why i start out with Roman Deadz....
The Trap Bar Deadz are for strongman. Sometimes they are in comps as an event. It also mimics the car deadlift. And when you go for the heavy DB pick-up, it's simply a low, low pick-up. Rack Pulls i find are great for getting use to the heavy weight. I believe it also helps the top part of a pull of a deadlift.

Thanks a ton guys. I feel really strong lately and i feel great! I have my most important strongman contest to date fast approaching, which is the 105kg Canada's Strongest Man. Being considered a favourite to win is still not in my grasp yet. However, someone who beat me last year at the same venue is going to be there competing. I'm becoming very focused and dialed into this show. However, there are days that are difficult when family responsiblilties are always there. Nonetheless, i am very confident i will do well as i am stepping up my training and eating and everything else.

Thanks o50! I love doing front squats, and next time i train legs i will involve the Box Squat and OH Squat. Those two are stellar for overall strength and power.
It was hot here in Vancouver, and because it was so hot i was just soaked when i left the gym today! I grew up where the winters lasted for months and i'd rather it be cool than hot.

I'm off to do deadlifts at the gym today. And the weekend is not in my budget as i have to take a sick day, the ferry ride $$, and other things along the way. I can have a great training day here without having to pay big bucks? Oh well, maybe one time i can get over there with you guys....You know what fucking sucks the fat shlong? Thank you. I'm going to work with G-rex and try to adjust my routine to a more suitable powerlifting program for my next cycle. I keep trying to change things up so thats its never a constant bore and that I dont hinder my gains.

But its a learning process as I go. As for the front squating the same sets 4 times in a row. Was pretty grueling, but I was happy I accomplished it!

Thanks the for the encouragment and your not doing to bad yourself there :D

That bar rotates eh? So very cool!!! I frequently watch WSM 2007 on Youtube. Mariusz goes up against Dave Oustland and destroys him. Poor Dave only got 1 rep. Is the bar set at different heights for the competitors, or is the height of the bar equal for all athletes. I'd say it can be adjusted for the height of the athelete?

ASGARDIAN

I just did a competition in Edmonton Alberta in Canada. The flight there is about 1hr 10min as opposed to the 12 1/2hr drive!

This contest was an open contest. LW/HW winners as well as an Overall winner. All the weights were the same for everyone.

The flight was good and quick and the contest was great too! It was at a park that had a paved area right beside this outdoor hockey rink. All of the events were already set up when i got there which was really cool.

The first event was the Viking Press and the weight started at 200lbs with unlimited tries to get to your max press. With minimum jumps of 10lbs I maxed out at 260 and came in last. I thought to myself i had to put it past me and get on with it. I didn't travel that far to do shitty again!

The Second event was the Conans Wheel. It was around 650 and felt heavy as f*ck. I made it 3/4 of a full rotation. I can't remember all my placings because i never checked...but a couple of the HW's couldn't even pick it up to move, so a big hell ya and i'm back in the game!

The Third event was the loading medley. 185 stone 25ft, 270 keg 25ft, run around to the other side and load a 255, 300, and 365 to 55 inches.
I got the stone and keg easy and so was the 255. I got the 300 lapped and raised it just below the mark. So close....My speed helped and if i would have got the 300 i would have nailed 3rd place. Nonetheless, i still place respectively.

The Fourth event was the Car Deadlift. I'm pretty sure it was a Toyota Matrix or something very similar. I would say that it was in the 600's???
I got 3 reps which was not great but not the worse either!

The Fifth and final event was the Tire Medley. I was most looking forward to this event. Something i new i could do. It was 550 x 4, 700 x 3
and a 850 x 2. The 550 was so easy, the 700 felt easy too, but the 850 had a screwed up grip and i ran out of time. After the time ran out i figured my mistakes and flipped it anyway! Just a liitle proof that i could do it!

All in all the competition was excellent. There were to guys on the mic, music in the background and a good atmosphere. After the show all the strongman had a tugg of war with a whole bunch of little kids and of course the kids won! I saw familiar faces and faces i had seen on tv on the OLN channell. I am very glad i went to this contest and would go back next year for sure.
This contest was good because i made a lot of mistakes to learn from. Next time i will be more prepared and better.
Thanks to the referee, the helpers and to all the athletes who made this a pleasure to be a part of.

Thanks guys! I'm going to take the rest of the week off and train Sunday. Either Strongman or Gym Training, it doesn't really matter, just something. I was in the midst of a slight cold before and during the contest. When i got home i was very sore the next day, and my cold roared up again, so i rest now and train later. I'm getting itchy to train hard again. Sunday will be two weeks of no training, just one competition!

I've had a long 3 months off! I was injured and my family became more important than my training after a long and expensive competition season.
I have worked on creating my own home gym that i and my 2 boys can use when they grow up.
I have gathered many implements through various people but still have many more things to purchase. This has put to light how difficult and costly it must have been for the guys i know that have made their own strongman gyms at home. Thanks Mr. Meat for all the times we trained together. I now realize that i had a great place to train at almost all your expense. I thank you for everything i know about strongman.

Anyway, this being my first day back i went light and expect to be sore the next day.

Well, my sled drag is just a wheel-barrell without the wheel and handles. Canadian Tire had just the barrell by itself for 25 bucks! A few minor modifications and walla...i have my sled drag.
My DB right now is PVC plumbing pipe. So far it's held 80lbs, but i don't trust it very much at all and will switch to steel soon.

Filled up the bucket as much as i could with wet slushy snow and dragged the sled down the street and back.

Thanks Matt! I started not to long ago after a long rest, but i'm dialed in to train again on a regular basis now. I figured i would train events during the week and go to the gym for the stuff i can't do at home. For instance, this Sunday i will train legs and some incline benching and a couple of others too.
As for competitions, there are no comps that i am specificly training for. I just love the sport of strongman and want to train that way. There are about 4-6 that i can do within close enough distance to where i live. So, we'll see what happens?

Gym training.

I missed Sunday because i had to pick up my son, and Monday i had to look after my boys in the evening. No training until today which to me is too long of a wait. I have to do what i do though, so no big deal i just train when i can.

Thanks very much Matt. If i do get to do a competition the first one i'll do is the Kamloops Strongest Man. This one is held in June sometime. The next one would be the Sannich Sunfest Strongest Man, which is in July. Finally, i think the last one i'd do is the Delwood Strength Challenge in Edmonton. That one is held in September and marks the end of the Strongman Competition season for me. Then it is back to training for the following year!
