I know it hurts like heck,
but there is no way in the world anyone could diagnose it,
Only a million possibilities, the spine or back is more complicated than your brain or heart, and there are more ways to treat it, so pray and see a spine surgeon.
No one the board could give you anything other than a guess, especially me.

There are so many possibilities I hardly know where to start. But for relief stretch the area by laying on your back and pulling your knee up to your chest holding for 10-15 seconds, then alternate legs. Do this 2-3 times on each leg and 2-3 times daily. Alternate ice and heat for about 15 minute incriments and take some anti-inflammitories. Also don't piss the area off until it abates. If it doesn't go away real soon see a doctor about it. Could be a bulging disc which is treatable without surgery. They say most people have them they just don't know it till it bulges to the point of where it hits that nerve (the one your feeling) and then they get an MRI and know for sure. If you take the proper steps, it's treatable like I said. If not, it can herniate like mine did and then your in for a real treat. Take it from me, a few years and 2 surgeries later I'm just now getting back close to where I was. And it's still gonna take a while... You don't want to mess with your back. Always use proper lifting techniques (i.e. don't bend at the waist if you don't have to). Stoop, squat, use your legs. Start treating your back now the way you would if it were injured so you can prevent it from becoming a real problem.

Cheers for the replys guys. I got it sorted I had a PT session the following morning - an elbow in my glute fixed it, turned out my piriformis muscle was very very tight. He was able to really help, saw my physio today he said it down to all the glute work I have been doing recently.

Very few people stretch the piriformis muscle and it is one of the common unlerlying causes of low back pain/ sciatic nerve pain. Stretching that gave me more instant relief than anything (and still does) when I'm having a bad back day. Well, that perc's but those are off limits now.
