Ripp's books are great. Practical Programming is a must read for anyone that trains to add weight tot he bar and doesn't have a coach.

Would that be before or after we read starting strength?
After.
Untill you can't make linear progress you don't need it. When you need to understand the principles of periodization and how to properly deload it is essential IMO.

I don't have to do the advanced stuff to make progress yet, but his description of the Texas method is really good for intermediates. It goes into great detail about how to get unstuck when you stall.

its all sport specific but once you start stalling after doing just the basics you need to in some way break the basic movements of yr sport apart and then rotate and increase the broken down movements that lend the best carryover to the main movements in the smallest rotation queue that produces results.
like instead of bb benching every week for the rest of yr life, when you stall in it break it into a few parts (find out by experimentation everyones dif) like db bench for bottom end - overheads or closegrip for lockout - and maybe inclines and push those numbers up along with a normal bb flat week every once in a while as a test day.
if you pick the right rotation and movements then yr mains should progress because you are bypassing adaptation and preventing stagnation.
you may also require a work capacity (conditioning) "upgrade" to facilitate the more frequent training and faster recovery sometimes required to allow further progress.

Oh... how about 25 or so more Ripitoe Videos? Go to the video section at Crossfit.com (http://www.crossfit.com/cf-info/excercise.html#Power) Coach Rip is the man, in a profound and fundamental way.

I'm working on my USAW Coaches paper and if you're at all into Oly work, Coach Burg' and his videos are better than ice cream. Severiously.

I've always been interested in Oly lifts, but never relaly implemented them in a w/o yet.
Do you have a link?

Rip is a Slow Lifting Guru.. self described in his own rather pointed way. If oly lifting is your cup o' bumper tea, then Coach Burg' is your man, and a mountain among titans in the field.
Really really.
