Default How high can you bounce?

Saturday I set a new one rep max on the bench press. It was about 15 LBs heavier than anything I had done before. I had a guy spotting me, I asked him to follow me all the way down and back up - due to my lack of confidence.

It was the weirdest feeling. I started off lowering it very slowly and under control, but as it neared me chest I lost a bit of control and know I bounced it - but it came off my chest so fast, and was 3/4 the way up before I felt any real strain that I was sure my spotter had lifted it off me. I was sure he had noticed I had lost control, and simply pulled the entire weight off of me. However when I finished he said he did not help at all, and my wife said she could tell he did not lift the bar at all.

However it felt literally effortless, like someone else lifted it, the first 3/4 of the lift. Then there was a little bit of strain locking it out.

Could I have bounced the weight through 3/4 of the movement? At 6'1" my arms are long, so the pressing movement is fairly long as well. It would have been a pretty high bounce.

I think you may have really done the lift, not bounced it. The mind fools us, usually telling us we can't do as much as we really could. Then one day it shuts up (or doesn't get turned on) and we surprise ourselves. Trouble is, the mind may come right back next time with "No you can't."

Going for a heavy lift, I think you should go through the negative quickly--as quickly as you can without causing a bounce. Then jam it back up there. Don't waste too much effort controling the down phase.

Yes, I know about the benefits of super-slow and emphasizing the negative. There's a thread running about it right now. It's all good, but here we are talking about going for your maximum weight, breaking through into new territory!

Bouncing can be dangerous if too heavy of weight.

One thing I had to relearn is that you don't always have to come down slow. When coming down at a fast rate and then exploding up, you can actually lift a little heavier....that is why powerlifting meets want a stop before the concentric rep.

I am not sure why, maybe the myostatic stretch reflex and the storage of potential energy? I dunno. Either way, pylometrics works in much a similiar way.

Superslomo is another way in which to change the workout around so your body can't adapt, for me. Like E2, I only use it once in a while.

Yeah, they said it did not look like I really bounced it. And could it bounce off your chest 14-16 inches without your chest feeling it? I dunno. But it was weird like someone else was lifting it. I am wondering if it was almost a spastic contraction due to exaggerated stretch reflex.
