Default I don't trip on Cardio, bros.

I admire the guys who have embraced sprinting.

My thing is I do cardio as a form of relaxation as well. When I'm lifting, I go as high as 90% intensity, so I just ain't trying to sprint right now.

What I do is simple:

Set the treadmill to 15% incline.
Set the speed to between 4.5 and 5.0

Keep going until I have burned no less than 700 calories. (You know, those machines that ask your weight and age and shit - they all differ in the ratios) Depending on whatever time constraints, I try to hit 800-900 calories in a session, and may hit 1000 calories occasionally.

At that pace I can do it in about 50 minutes.

I don't eat anything at least an hour afterward, usually because my appetite is damn near gone. If I'm still not hungry after an hour, I'll mix a serving of Universal BCAA Stack with a serving of the Ultimate Meal and drink that.

I do that about 3 times a week.

Do you all think that's too much?

No, it's not too much. Add some THERMOREXIN and I bet you'll turn up the speed.

Talk about relaxation after a good set of sprinting. Endorphines yammm.

I plan to get some for me and MrsPdoggy too in a few days. NYC gives her nausea.

I don't eat anything at least an hour afterward,

After going at it with such intensity and burning so many calories, you'd better eat/drink something ASAP - esp. if you haven't eaten anything for a while beforehand.

I usually go for 30-35 min cardio sessions in the am on empty stomach, burning around 500 cals. When done, I drink a 20-25g of pure BCAA, such as XtremeFormulation's ICE or Protein Customizer's version.

I then shower and eat a full meal with protein and complex carbs.

Works quite well, esp. at avoiding lbm catabolism.

(BTW Ulter, when will Thermorexin be available inthe UK? Thanks)

RippedUp,

That goes against everything I've practiced regarding AM Cardio.

Care to explain?

PDoggy - Cardio is going to do nothing but increase your health and physique. 50 min's 3 times a week is nothing excessive and will help cut bf. When I'm training for a fight I'll do hard cardio 4 times a week for roughly 90 min's. I look in great shape for all my events, so I don't think you're overdoing it. Now if you're in extreme bulk mode you may want to cut it down, but for a recreational bodybuilder I think cardio should be mandatory, at least a couple days a week.

Don't let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do.

I always have a 25 gram whey protein shake right before I do cardio no matter what time it is(be it morning, afternoon or nighttime). Doing this seems to work really well for keeping energy up and spareing muscle.

PDOGGY,

After 8 hrs of sleep or so, your circulating blood glucose would be quite low, which leads to secretion of catabolic hormones such as glucagon and cortisol in order to use stored energy and survive.

I personally am against drinking whey before am cardio as it defeats the whole purpose; your body will use the protein as energy.
Just do your cardio, then eat ASAP to reduce the excess catabolism that will have occurred.
BCAAs are very good at that, as leucine even stimulates protein synthesis.

After that, make sure you eat a clean whole meal - I go with, oatmeal, 30g of protein worth of turkey breast, and another 25-30g of a good protein blend mixed in the oats.

Thanks.

I gotta disagree from personal experience I think your body is going to use protein as fuel weather you give it some, or it gets it from your muscles when you do cardio. I don't really have much in the way of scientific reasoning to back myself up right now(hopefully by the end of the summer I'll have enough knowledge too). That's just my opinion, so I say too everyone to do whatever works the best for yourself.

The body would also have liver and muscle glycogen - unless on a very low carb diet - that it would use for energy, and obviously fatty acids from adipose tissue.

Protein will undoubtedly and unfortunately be broken down, but if your nutrition plan for the rest of the day is sound, then lbm loss should be minimal.

But as you said, it's mostly a question of experience and knowing how your body responds to different stimuli/nutrition/cardio plans.
Chemical assistance plays another significant role as far as preserving as much lbm as possible.

Lots of factors to consider.
