Default We are #1

A first: 1 in 100 Americans jailed - Crime & courts - MSNBC.com

1% of Americans currently live behind bars. I can only imagine what the percentage is that have spent time behind bars at some time.

I bet that percentage would drop dramatically if they overhauled mandatory minimums for drug charges.

So can we infer from this that we are getting better at catching and locking up criminals?

Actually that seems pretty low to me, given human nature. I mean if you randomly selected one hundred people, it is very likely that at least one of them is or has engaged in some kind of felony.

It's an indirect tax on drugs, the prison and judicial system create employment for tens of thousands by keeping non-violent offenders incarcerated (personally I would advocate for keeping the crack heads, heroin addicts and the like who rob to feed their habit locked up, but obviously 'we the people' are too damn stupid to distinguish between socially harmful and non-harmful drugs and need a simple message.. so the kids who smoke the occasional joint and AAS users have to tke one for the team. There are casualties in any war).

Wins votes and keeps the soccer moms feeling safe - win / win!

There was an excellent CBC doc a few months back that highlighted just how out of touch with reality the heads of the DEA and the 'drug czar' actually are when it comes to minor drug crimes vs socially damaging drug problems, the mayor of vancouver refering to them as nice, well intentioned in their own way, but complete idiots.

This isn't worth an argument, but it's pretty funny to read that on a steroid discussion board .....

I didn't mean literally, like a government lead program to make people commit crime

Thats right. Bjaarki is/was a felon. As are all users of AS without prescription. And just think, should he or any user be caught, we would lose our right to vote and to possess a firearm, among other things. Given B's strong position on politics and matters of freedom, not to mention his job as a researcher, kind of makes you wonder doesnt it? I mean to risk so very much, for what? Vanity? To finally be in the "cool" crowd? I suppose I will never understand that part of it. I mean speaking for myself, Ive always lived on the edge and been a wild card. But Bjaarki.......just doesnt seem fitting really.

I know a man who recently got busted in a prostitution sting. He was married, father of three, and a successful engineer with a big firm. In short order he lost his wife, custody of his kids, his job, and is currently doing community service at the animal shelter cleaning kennels. And for what? A blow job? I dont know what is more stupid. That a man can lose so much over a simple sex act, or that a man WOULD risk so much over such a meaningless sex act.

A steroid discussion board proves my point. People take steroids of their own free will. Nobody is "making them" do it.

Even if you were not being literal, there is no sense in which a government lead program or sting operation "makes" you commit a crime. You do it of your own free will.

Make that aas users lacking a prescription while situated in America. It's legal here to own and use gear.

The other side to criminal activity is defining the criminal act. In that, the 'felon' might not even have knowledge of the transgression, much less free will not to commit it. One can add to that those who are wrongly convicted or incarcerated while awaiting trial.

Personal drug use is a huge part of the prison population. Once in, most are done having meaningful employment - meaning they pay less taxes. They cost an exhorbitant amount of money to house in prison for personal possession, and once out most pay less taxes than every since they have lower paying jobs. Its a lose lose. Many people in prison for personal possession had decent jobs prior to being arrested.

I think its worthy considering keeping them out of prison, go through drug rehab which they pay for, continue to work and pay taxes - and if clean for 2 years or whatever the charge is expunged. Its a win win for soceity.

I am talking personal use of course.
