i've had 4 hernea repairs since i was born...I can't tell you a weight lifters healing time but for me it took about a motnh or so...other then that i cant really tell you that much...its more along the lines of when the incisions fully heal up is what gets most people...
Matt~
cool. I am going to talk to one of the major strong men competitors that just had his done and see what he has to say about it. I go into the doc on Thursday. I just didn't want down time at this point in the year but the thing with injuries is there is never a "right" time for them.

Taz,
My husband had it done about a year or so ago at age 50. They cut him from breastbone to crotch (more than one hernia). He has since had meet squat of 936, and plans on squatting 1015 at APF Master Nationals this year.
He came back very quickly. Said the day he had it and the day after were by far the worst, but after that didn't take anything more than Advil for pain.

I had it done years ago. Then it was 6 weeks before I could do anything.

That is good news... better than most reports that I have heard recovery wise..... :)

I guess that's what they refer to as muscle maturity. In my case, all age has done is add to the frequency of my injuries.

Taz,
I was just going to post something on this topic today. I had a discectomy on L4, L5 this past Tuesday and was up walking the same day...not quickly mind you, but functional nonetheless. I was hoping to hear some other folks experiences on this topic as well. It seems every person I talk to has had great success with this procedure and general downtime from lifting is 4-6 weeks. If I keep getting this much better by the day I will be a VERY happy camper. I have suffered from sciatica for years and as of right now, I notice NONE of those symptoms. Toes are still a little tingly from the operation, but the doc said thats normal as he has rarely seen a protrusion the size of the one he removed from me the other day(it was literally crushing my L5 nerve against my spine). By the time I got cut, I was pretty much crippled. I'm showering and moving around nicely now though and glad I had it done. Hardest part of course will be staying away from the gym even if I feel good. Would love to hear others experiences on this. I've lost 15 pounds in the past month of being incapacitated, but I'm not sweating that at all...
peace

So, it just occurred to me that you were talking about an actual hernia and not a herniated disc:) So, wrong topic I guess. Evidently, I am still pretty high from the Dilaudids...
