Default Nettle root (urtica dioca)

commonly used in "testosterone boosters", for its ability to either inhibit or bind to SHBG, can cause gynecomastia.

Gynaecomastia in a man and hyperoestrogenism in a woman due to ingestion of nettle (Urtica dioica).Sahin M, Yilmaz H, Gursoy A, Demirel AN, Tutuncu NB, Guvener ND.
Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases Department, Baskent University, Ankara, Turkey. drsahinmustafa@yahoo.com

Nettle (Urtica dioica) is commonly sold as a herbal tea in Turkey. We report a case of gynaecomastia in a man (in which the only aetiologic factor identified was nettle tea consumption) and a case of galactorrhoea in a woman (in which the only aetiologic factor identified was also nettle tea ingestion).

PMID: 18264183 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]

while SHBG levels are best at the lower end of the spectrum (and can cause issues at the high end), like many things lowering them too much can cause issues.

arguably these are isolated cases, however in light of the impact of the HIV/Oxandrolone/SHBG suppression study and its impact on hormone levels... its something that bears looking into.

i actually just picked up some:

"Stinging Nettles 480mg" ... 480mg of Stinging Nettles (Uritica Dioica) (leaf)..

i was concerned my shbg might be outta control due to me being on HRT for so long...

this is the leaf though, and not the root -- i couldnt find the root locally...

thoughts on dose?

why not get blood work before making such a leap?

there is evidence that the reason that super high doses are needed for some individuals is not because they have high SHBG but rather that they have LOW shbg.

as a note- trenbolone is not bound by SHBG and is a heavy suppressor of SHBG (most orals also heavily suppress SHBG)

i only use test.. isnt it a safe assumptino to believe that my shbg is pretty high? i've been 'on' for years now.. is it that big of a leap to take nettle root?

and is 480mg of the leaf considered a "super high dose?"

i am unable to tell if the 'leaf' is different from the 'root', or if some manufacturers just label it differently. i assume there is probably a difference in the potency, hence the leaf having a higher dosage.

My understanding is that the root rather than the leaf holds the actives for suppression of SHBG. The leaves are typically used for tea concoctions and infusions.

no

...hmm...

extraction and lignan contents (prior to extraction) are what will vary... have not looked at differences.. lignans are most concentrated in root. leaf is used for its lectin content, which are in theory immunomodulatory...

It's never too late to start a biology course...

Lectins are sugar-binding proteins which are highly specific for their sugar moieties. They typically play a role in biological recognition phenomena involving cells and proteins. For example, some bacteria use lectins to attach themselves to the cells of the host organism during infection.
