You're right -- food doesn't have to taste like shit in order for you to eat it and grow.
I know this because I cook for Ulter

The man GROWS, believe me, as long as he is eating often each day.
For the most part, our eating practices include mostly home cooking -- we go out for sushi once a week and sometimes 1-2 more times at sit-down restaurants if I don't want to cook. We eat a lot of protein, whole grains, lowfat dairy, and produce. Ulter snacks on Clif bars, organic tortilla chips/salsa, pretzel sticks. That's about all he eats that is processed (that we have at home).
Anyway, here are some easy marinade or sauce/topping recipes for steak:
Grilled Balsamic-Marinated Rib-Eyes with a Balsamic Barbecue Sauce Recipe : : Food Network
The first list of ingredients there is for a marinade, using healthy oils and very cheap balsamic vinegar.
Jamaican Jerk Flank Steak Recipe : Robin Miller : Food Network
This one is more of a seasoning rub; just sub Splenda for the sugar portion, even though it's really not that much sugar to worry about, IMO.
Marinated No-Mystery Meats Recipe : Rachael Ray : Food Network
One recipe, many marinades and variations.
Ginger Flank Steak with Wasabi Smashed Potatoes Recipe : Rachael Ray : Food Network
If you like Asian flare, try this marinade. I buy ginger jarred, already crushed/peeled, so I just take out what I need from the jar. It's in the grocery store by the jarred, pre-minced, pre-peeled garlic.
Hope this is helpful
