I love Basmati rice, but I always considered it a white grain.

I personally would need to see the nutritional info of Basmati vs Brown rice to determine if it's "safe" for prep. If the macros are comparable and you don't see a raise in sugar/carbs or a drop in fiber for the Basmati... then I say give it a shot.

Another alternative, though, to brown rice is chinese grains. I've heard this mix is pretty good (and competition friendly) particularly when cooked in a rice steamer/cooker.
